SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,073, dated September 1, 1 896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. BOSSLER, of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved \Vindow-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a fastening device especially adapted for securing the upper and the lower sashes of windows in their closed position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, durable, and economic,and which cannot be unfastened from the outside.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the fastening device that it will be antomatic in looking and can be conveniently unlocked from within the room, and whereby, further, the device will in no manner interfere with the opening or closing of the window-sashes to which it is applied.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fullyset forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a vertical section through the meeting-rails of an upper and a lower window-sash, illustrating the latch portion of the device in side elevation and the keeper portion in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the meeting-rails of the window-sashes and likewise a plan view of the fastening device; and Fig. 3 is a section taken vertically through the latch portion of the device, illustrating the keeper in front elevation.

In carrying out the invention the device consists of a latch A and a keeper B. The

, latch A is adapted for the upper rail of the lower sash A, and the keeper B is to be secured upon the upper face of the lower rail of the upper sash B. The latch A consists of a base 10,screwed or otherwise secured upon the aforesaid upper rail of the lower sash, and an angular post 11., substantially L-shaped in general contour, is preferably made integral with the central portion of the base, and the horizontal member of this post will extend over the lower rail of the upper sash B.

finger 12 is projected downward from the under face of the horizontal member of the post 11, and the forward wall or edge of the aforesaid finger is inclined, as shown at 13 in Fig.

1, the opposing wall or edge of the body or vertical portion of the post 11 being straight, as is illustrated in the same figure.

A bearing-surface 15 is provided upon the under face of the horizontal member of the post at its outer end, and in the outer edge of the finger 12 a recess 16 is made, while the lower portion 17 of the aforesaid outer edge of the finger is inclined, as is also shown in Fig. 1, so that the extreme lower end of the latch-finger is substantially pointed.

The keeper B consists of an arched casing 18, provided with side flanges 19, the latter being adapted to receive screws or other fastening devices,and from one of the said flanges a post 20 is vertically projected, while in the top portion of the arched casing 18 a longitudinal opening 21 is made, of sufficient size to receive the latch-finger 12, and the forward wall 22 of the opening 21 is beveled in a downward direction.

Near the rear upper portion of the casing an opening 23 is made in both of its sides, the said openings being in alinement with each other and in registry with the recess 16 in the latch-finger when the said finger is within the casing. A spring locking-bar 24 is secured at one end to the post 20, and this locking-bar extends through the openings 23 in the casing, being capable of lateral movement in said openingsand out beyond the opposite side of the casin g, where it terminates in a handle 25.

In operation, the lower sash-having been raised and it being desirable to close the same, as the said sash is carried downward the finger of the latch will enter the slot or opening 21 in the top of the keeper, and the inclined surface 22 at the forward end of the said opening or slot, by engagement with the inclined forward surface of the said latch-finger, will carry the finger outward and thereby draw the meeting-rails of the two sashes together, closely holding them in this position when the latch-finger has been fully entered into the keeper. As the finger first enters the keeper the rear inclined surface 17 of the finger will engage with the spring latching-bar 24 and will force the said bar rearward, and when the latch-finger has fully entered the keeper the locking-bar will be released and will enter the recess in the said finger, as shown in Fig. 1, while the bearing-surface 15 of the angular latch-post 11 will engage with the upper surface of the keeper. lVhen the two sashes are locked together, either of the sashes may be opened by simply drawing the locking-bar 24: from engagement with the latch-finger.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a fastening device for windows, a latch-post provided with a recessed finger, a keeper having an opening to receive the latchfinger, and a locking-bar carried by the keeper, being laterally movable thereon and arranged to enter the recess in the said latch-finger when the said finger is within said keeper, securing the finger to the keeper, as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a fastening device for window-sashes,

the combination, with an angular latch-post having a finger pendent from its horizontal member, the said finger being inclined at its bottom and inclined at its forward edge, its rear edge having a recess produced therein, of a keeper provided with a slot arranged to receive the latch-finger, the forward wall of the said slot being downwardly inclined, and a spring latch-bar passed through the keeper, being free at one end and fast at the other, the latch-bar occupying such position in the keeper that when the latch-finger enters the keeper the said latch-bar will automatically spring into the recess of the latch-finger, as and for the purpose specified.
