UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. NOYES, OF NEW'BURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,389, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed December 11, 1895. Serial No. 571,795- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. blows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to so form the back of a comb that it will be of the desired strength throughout and that the body of the comb may be made of more than one piece, theinvention consisting in a comb having a metallic casing for the back constructed and applied as hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a comb formed of one piece and before applying the metallic casing. Fig. 3 shows two parts of a comb before applying the metallic casing. Fig. 4 shows the metallic casing before being applied to the comb. Fig. 5, drawn on a larger scale, shows atransverse section on line 5 5 in Fig. 1.
The body of the comb A is made of horn or other suitable material, and of one piece, as shown in Fig. 2, or of two pieces a and b, as shown in Fig. 3. The back 0 is so formed that it is considerably broader in the middle than at the ends, is somewhat rounded at the back edge, and is provided with a longitudinal groove 01 on each side, which is rectangular in transverse section. The metallic casing B for the back is formed of a single piece, and is of a shape when applied to a comb that its interior will fit the back edge of the back of the body or horn portion of the comb. This casing is therefore wider in the middle than at the ends, the forward edges being straight, so as to be closed down into the rectangular groovesd, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The ends of the casing are also closed over the ends of the comb, as shown.
I am well aware that a comb has heretofore been made having the back of one piece with the body of the comb and shaped as shown, but without the longitudinal grooves cl. I am also aware that a comb has heretofore been made provided with a metallic casing, which, however, has been straight, nearly circular in transverse section, and of the same width in the middle as at the ends. Such casing has been applied by sliding the same endwise onto the back of the comb. Such combs have not been of the desired strength or stiffness at their middle part, unless of heavy metal, and it has been difficult to make the body or horn portion of two pieces, owing to the form of the metallic casing, which, being circular, would allow one part to swing with reference to the other, so that the two parts would not be in the same plane.
By my invention the back of the comb is greatly strengthened where strength is especially required, and the casing is so closed down onto the horn portion as to be held securely, particularly on account of the rectangular form of the grooves d.
It is often desirable to make long combs from stock out of which only short lengths can be out. By means of the metallic casing formed and applied as herein specified such short lengths having their adjacent ends butted closely together may be employed to form a comb, and will be securely held in their proper relative position.
I claim as my invention- 1. A comb having a back wider at the middle than at the ends, and a straight, longitudinal and rectangular groove in each side of the back, and provided with a casing of which the interior is of the same size and shape as the exterior of said back, said casing having straight, longitudinal edges which are closed into said grooves, whereby the casing is securely and closely held throughout its length on said back, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A comb having the body thereof formed of several pieces placed end to end, a back wider at the middle than at the ends, and a straight longitudinal groove in each side of the back, and provided with a casing of which the interior is of the same size and shape as the exterior of said back, said casing having straight, longitudinal edges which are closed into said grooves, whereby the casing and parts of the comb are closely and securely held in their proper position with reference to each other, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM H. NOYES. Witnesses:
Enw. DUMMER, L. S. WHITNEY.
