BLIND STOP.
No. 553,232. Patented Jan. 21, 1896.

Attorney;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. ELSTON, OF ELMIRA, NEIV YORK.
BLIND-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,232, dated January 21, 1896.
Application filed March 11, 1895- To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. ELSTON, of Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind-Stops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved blindstop, and the same is especially directed to the provision of an improved device of simple construction for lockin g the slat-operating rod.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blind or shutter with the lock removed from the rod. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, showing the lock in engagement with the rod. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lock, showing the same partly in section.
A designates the shutter-frame, B the pivoted slats, and C the operating-rod. A look for holding the rod raised with the slats closed consists of the member D, secured to frame A and forked at its upper end to accommodate tongue E of the swinging portion S, thus constituting a simple and durable hinge. At the upper end of the swinging member is the inwardly-curved holder G, cut out to form the inwardly-turned stop-shoulder II. This curved holder embraces the lower end of the rod 0, and stop-shoulder I forms a rest for the extremity of the rod 0, as will be understood. The outer or vertical portion of the angular plate which is secured to the swinging portion of the lock is formed Serial No, 541,343. (No model.)
with the angular depression J at its lower end in which is adapted to fit the upper notched end K of a laterally-swinging latch L, pivoted at-its lower end to fixed member D of the look. When it is desired to open the slats, the said latch is pushed laterally, as indicated in Fig. 1, when the lock may be turned backward and the slats immediately opened, whereas when it is desired to lock the slats the same are closed, with their operating-rod elevated, and then the lock is turned upward in engagement therewith and there securely held by the latch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of members D and S arranged in line and hinged together, the former being secured to the shutter frame, the
socket portion upon the upper end of member S, open upon its inner side to fit around the lower end of the slat rod when turned upward thereto and catch L for holding the hinged parts rigid, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the shutter, the slats, the slat operating rod, the look hinged to the frame, the holder for engaging the lower por-- CHAS. C. ELSTON. Witnesses:
