7 L. G. WERNER.
PIGKER MOTION FOR LOOMS. Nor 552,562. Patented Jan. 7, 1896.
WITEEEEEE: INVENTEIR: if fiwqw 1 AN DREW RGRAHAM. PHUTO-UTHO.WASHI NFI'DN, DC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS C. WERNER, OF BROAD BROOK, CONNECTICUT.
PlCKER-MOTION FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,562, dated January 7, 1896.
Application filed October 26, 1894.
To otZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS O. WERNER, of Broad Brook, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Motions for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in picker-motions for looms; and it consists in the novel features of construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the specification, clearly illus trated in the drawings, .and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, like characters designating like parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of an end portion of a loom, showing my improvement embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of my adjustable means 011 the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of a portion of the shuttle-box, showing the picker and its engagement with the stick.
a represents a shuttle-box, and Z; the pickerstick, preferably of steel, pivoted at its lower end in a slot d of the casting cl. A strap 6 is connected to the lower end of the pickerstick and provided with holes 6, in which one end of a coil-spring f is inserted. I provide a series of holes so that the tension of the spring may be regulated as desired. I have shown the picker-stick b and its casting 1) as in two parts; but they may be made equally as well in one,
a is a picker-block provided with the slot (0", in which the picker-stick can play up and down. a is the picker. a is a latch upon the block engaging a screw a or other part upon the picker to join the picker and block together. Said picker and block are mounted to slide upon a rod a and in a groove a thus insuring the picker moving in a straight line to and fro. Since the picker-stick is pivoted in its movement to and fro, it will have a sliding engagement with the block a by means of the slot a".
The tendency of the pioker st-ick when it first starts is to throw the picker upward,
,nected with the picker as shown. when the picker-stick moves forward and Serial No. 527,021. (N0 model.)
very often dislodging the shuttle by causing the picker to make a lateral blow upon the end of the shuttle. To obviate this and to insure the picker giving a direct blow upon the shuttle in the direction of its axis, I provide the picker-block and have it loosely con-. Now,
gives its blow to the picker-block, this blow is transmitted to the picker in a direct line, and the picker and block by means of the latch move together.
a is the ordinary buffer for the picker and a for the picker-block.
g represents the arm of the rock-shaft. h is the rock-rod having a swivel connection at one end with said arm by means of the lugs g and the pin 9 passing through said lugs and the reduced end of the rock-arm.
c is an adjustable sleeve mounted upon the stick Z2, and having its arms 0 hollow and shaped to fit the stick, and provided with setscrews 0" for securing the sleeve upon the stick at any desired point.
0 is a rod rigidly secured to a lug 0' upon the sleeve, and provided at its opposite end with screw-threads c. The pivoted end of the stick or its casting b, when the two are made separate, is provided with a lug b having an aperture in which the rod 0 is arranged.
c are nuts, one upon either side of the part 19 by means of which the rod 0 and its 0011- nected sleeve 0 may be adjusted up and down on the stick and retained in any desired position.
m is a connecting-piece provided with a hollow head on, to receive the screw-threaded end h of the rock-rod h. m is a set-screw for firmly binding the rod in said head. m is a loop connected to the head and provided at its end with the ball-shaped projection m which fits ina correspondingly-shaped socket in the sleeve. over said ball-shaped projection and hold it to its seat, the strap being secured to the sleeve by means of rivets or'screws 0 The parts being constructed and arranged as shown and described, the sleeve is adjusted upon the stick by means of the nuts 0 and the set-screws a" to any desired position, according to the length of the throw it A strap 0 is arranged to fit is desired for the stick to take, the length of the rock-rod it being also suitably adjusted. Upon the starting of the machinery the picker-stick moves back and forth, driving the picker and sliding freely up and down in the slot a in the picker-block. At the same time the picker-stick by means of the swivel connection is permitted to have a lat eral play. The ball-joint by means of which the loop is connected with the sleeve gives a secure and almost frictionless connection between the rock-rod and the picker-stick.
The picker block and adjustable sleeve may be made of aluminum, if desired.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In'a picker motion in combination, a rock shaft-and arm, a picker-stick, a lug 19 fast on said stick, a rock rod connected at one end to said arm, a sleeve mounted upon said pickerstick, and formed with a ball bearing and a rod 0 adapted at one end to be adj ustably secured in said lug 19 a loop adapted to straddle said stick and formed at one end with a ball adapted to fit in said ball bearing, and at its other end with a socket in which one end of said rock rod is secured, and a strap 0 secured to said sleeve and formed to fit over said ball, and adapted in connection with said sleeve to form a socket in which said ball is loosely held, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of October, A. D. 1894.
