ROBERT E. LEE CROSBY, OF LITTLE RED, ARKANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,362, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed May 20, 1895. Serial N0. 5 19,960- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. LEE OEosBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Red, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to plows, and more particularly to stocks therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a plow-stock which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shovel-plow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the stock removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. l is side elevation of the same.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the plow-stock, which is preferably cast in one piece. The stock is composed of the body 1 having diverging hollow legs 2 and 3, into the former of which is secured by a bolt 4 the plow-beam 5 and into the latter of which is inserted the shank of the shovel 7. These legs are connected by an approximately triangular shaped, solid portion 8, which not only strengthens the parts but gives the desired weight to the stock. The face 9 is curved and rounded, so that grass, clods, and other obstructions will be shed off and not remain to choke up and interfere with the movement of the plow. Lugs 10 are cast on the sides of the stock at their upper and lower ends, between which are inserted the handles 11 of the plow. A bolt 12 is passed through the stock and handles near the upper end of the stock, while a second bolt 6 is passed through the lower ends of the handles and the leg 3 of the stock and the shank of the shovel or plow, thus firmly securing thehandle in position. A slot 14 is formed in the upper end of the stock, and through which is adapted to be inserted a bar or tool for the purpose of driving either the beam or shovel out of the legs after their securing-bolts have been removed.
A stock thus constructed is strong and durable, while it allows the different parts constituting the plow to be readily attached and removed for the purpose of repairing them or replacing them with others.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction of the invention will be apparent without requiring further explanation.
The form of stock shown and described is my preferred form; but I would have it distinctly understood that I do not wish to be restricted thereto, but reserve to myself the right to make such changes in construction which would suggest themselves to an ordi nary mechanic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A plow stock composed of a body portion, having two diverging hollow legs connected by a solid approximately triangular portion having a curved rounded face, substantially as set forth.
2. A plow stock composed of a body por tion, having diverging hollow legs connected together by an approximately triangular body, one of said legs having lugs cast on its upper and lower ends and formed with an aperture at the rear upper end of the body portion, in combination with the handle, plow beam, shovel and fastening means for connecting them to the stock, substantially as set forth.
, In testimon whereof I affix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
ROBERT E. LEE CROSBY.
