SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 556,572, dated March 17, 1896.

againstastop upon the overhead track. This bolt is placed so as to hold the gate adjacent to the rollers upon which the gate is suspended and moved. The bolt is by preference placed within the vertical members that form one side of the gate or door, and the bolt is actuated in closing the gate by a spring or weight to shoot the same upwardly into the opening in the overhead track or against a stop thereon, and the said bolt is drawn down by a rod and L-shaped hand-operated lever to open the door or gate. As the bolt of the sliding gate or door engages the overhead track adjacent to the devices supporting the gate or door from said track, it is obvious that the relation of these parts will not be changed by any settling of a building or slight change in the relation of the parts of the door-frame, and therefore the locking function will not be affected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken elevation and partial section illustrating my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section at the bolt. Fig. 3 is an elevation at the lockingcorner of the gate and frame with the bolt depressed. Fig. 4 is apartial elevation and section showing a modification; Fig. 5, a crosssection of the same, and Fig. 6 represents a partial elevation and section of another modiiication.
The door-casing A is made, as usual, with an upright piece B, carrying a buffer-blockl.
The gate or door is of any desired character. I have shown it as composed of the vertical side members c and d and top and bottom members e and f, inclosing the open- Serial No. 541,731. (No model.)

Arms or hangers c and e are connected to the side member c and top member e and extend upwardly and carry rollers 2 3, which rollers 2 3 rest upon the overhead track a, said track being connected to and supported by brackets a from the doorcasing A. The lower ends of the side members c d are notched and set over the rib of the guide-plate b, which in turn is secured to the door-casing sill at the bottom of the door. The side member cl is hollow and open at the upper end and provided with a guide-plate 4 with an opening.
The bolt consists of the rod h, guide-head h', and roller t', and between the guide-head and plate 4 is a helical spring g around the rod h, whose office is to project the bolt up- Wardly.
A plate la is secured to the open-work C and carries a lever-case k,within which is the L-shaped lever h2, that can be operated by hand through the opening in the case k. The forked end of this lever h2 passes into the hollow side member d and engages a pin on the lower end of the rod h, the office of this lever being to draw down the bolt against the spring g to unlatch the door.
Fig. 3 represents the bolt as drawn down and the gate as partly open, in which position the rollert' is held against the under side of the overhead track a by the spring g. As the gate closes, the upper end of the bolt holding the roller is instantly projected upwardly into the openin g 5 in the overhead track, and as the line of motion of the bolt is at right angles to the line'of motion of the gate the recoil action is received directly against the side of the bolt and roller and there is no tendency to move the bolt. Hence the locking action is positive. The guide-head h moves easily within the hollow side member, d, and the roller lis of a size to operate freely when depressed, as in Fig. 3.
I-n the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the overhead track l has double internal ways for the rollers 6, and the gate is supported from these rollers by hangers 7, having hubs through which the spindles of the rollers 6 pass. In this overhead track is secured the latch-plate m, and the roller z" at IOO the upper end of the bolt passes under and comes up against said latch-plate when the door or gate is closed.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the overhead track is made with an inclined latch-block 'n for the roller of the bolt to underrun, and the bolt is made with a pin 8, and a spring o secured in the hollow upper member of the gate has a forked end that straddles the bolt-rod beneath the pin 8, and this spring raises thisbolt so that the roller runs on the under side of the overhead track, and after the bolt underruns the latch-block 'n the spring at once raises the bolt to secure the door. A substitute for this spring is the pivoted weighted lever fr, (shown by dotted lines,) whose operation is similar tou that of the spring o. It is obvious that the spring o or the weighted lever 7' can be located at any suitable place upon the gate and work to equal advantage.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the door or gate is supported by the overhead track and is secured in place by a bolt engaging a stop upon said track, and that these parts will not change their relation, but will move together if a building should settle. Therefore it will always be possible to secure the door or gate when shut.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination with a gate or door, a horizontal overhead track and hangers for supporting the door by the track, of a vertically-moving bolt having a roller upon its upper end running against the under side of the track and a stop at the track for holding the bolt and its roller when the door is closed, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a sliding gate or door, a horizontal overhead track therefor having an opening, the hangers at the opposite side portions of the gate and the rollers carried by said hangers for supporting the gate upon said track, of a bolt having a roller at its upper end and connected to one side portion of the gate or door adjacent to one of said rollers, means for projecting said bolt and roller upwardly into the opening in the track for securing the gate or door and means for drawing down the bolt to release the gate or door, substantially as specified.
3. The sliding gate or door having a hollow side member cl, the rod h, guide-head 72, and roller i constituting the bolt, a guide-plate L in said hollow member d, a spring around the rod h above the plate 4 for projecting the bolt upwardly and means 'for drawing the same down, in combination with an overhead track having a stop against which the bolt and roller are projected to lock the gate or door, the arms and rollers connected therewith and resting upon the overhead track for carrying the gate or door, substantially as specified.
