Z. F. JONES. PLOW PROTECTOR.
N0:549,366. Patented Nov. 5, 1895.
UNITED STATES vPATENT OEEICE.
ZAOHARIAH FLEMING JONES, OF SCOTTSVILLE, VIRGINIA.
PLOW- PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,366, dated November 5, 1895.
Application led July 8, 1895. Serial No. 555,260. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH FLEMING JONES, residing at Scottsville, in the county .of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in plowprotectors by which to facilitate the safe and easy removal of the plow from field to field or point to point; and the invention consists in the construction of the protector, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of a plow provided with my improvements; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are perspective views of the protector, differing from each other in some features of construction.
The difficulties of removing the plow from field to ield and the danger of breaking the plow point or shareor other portions of the plow are too well known to require any detailed reference. e
By my improvement l provide a protector adapted to receive and hold the plow so the latter may remain in an upright position and the protector form a runner which may be moved easily over the ground.
The protectorAis made of a suitable plate or strip of iron or steel and has its forward end upturned at B and is adapted to clamp the plowpoint between the extremity C of such upturned portion and the body of the protector. This upturned portion is returned toward the upper side of the body of the protector, forming a bow-clamp in which to bind the plow-point, and the body of the protector immediately below the point of the bowclamp is upwardly rounded or bulged at D, forming a rounded portion, which presses against the under side of the plow-point and aids in clamping the same in the protector. Near the forward end of the protector and in rear of the upturned end portion I form an upwardly-projected bend or portion E, the purpose of which is Vto set the clamping portion of the protector at such height that the plow will be held sufficiently high above the ground to avoid the possibility of the share striking against stones, roots, or other projections. While for such reason this upward bend E is preferred, it may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 3, and if desired the body portion of the protector may be made approximately flat, as shown in said iigure; but it may be preferred to round the body portion of the protector, forming a rocker-like support, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. I also form the protector with an upturned rear end F,
vwhich in use supports the rear end of the plow, being provided with a seat or seats for such end of the plow, as shown. In Figs. 2 and 3 this seat is shown as aslot f, which may be provided with notches f', forming seats for clamping-wedges, which wedges may be employed when the plow is of an unusual pattern and does not lit well lin the protector; but plows as ordinarily constructed will usually fit the protector in such manner as to be securely clamped without the use of these wedges.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, which is intended to receive either a right or left hand plow, the seats for the landside are formed on opposite sides of a central V-shaped projecting portion, which in practice fits between the landside and the moldboard. In this construction for right and left hand plows the extremity of the upturned front end portion is provided with two notches b, arranged side by side, one receiving the point of the left-hand plow, the protector being of suflicient width to properly support a right or left hand plow, as may be desired. This wide protector, with its plurality of pointnotches, is preferred for veryheavy plows, as its width not only permits such plow to balance, but also avoids cutting too deeply into the ground, after the fashion of a wide-wheel tire; but for ordinary use the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, wherein but a single notch b is employed, willbe found sufficient.
In applying the protector the plow-point is inserted in the bow-clamp, the landside resting in the seat of the rear upturned portion, when a slight blow upon the front end ofthe protector will cause it to clamp the vplow firmly in place. The plow may now b e dragged from place to place, the protector acting as a runner and avoiding any damage to the plow parts. When the plow is in use, the protector is carried on the beam, being held thereto by suitable staples, which may IOO be suitably formed and secured to the beam by screws, bolts, or in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-
l. A plow protector having an upturn ed forward end forming a clamping bearing for the point of the plow, substantiallyas shown and described.
2. A plow protector having an upturned rear end forming` a support for the rear end of the plow, substantially as shown and described.
A plow protector having its front and rear ends upturned, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l. A plowprotector having its forward end bent upward and returned forming a bow clamp in which to bind the plow point, substantially as shown and described.
5. A plow protector havin gits forward end bent upward and returned, the extremity thereof being notched to receive the plow point, substantially as shown and described.
G. A plow protector havin g an upturned forward end and provided below the extremity of such upturned end with an upwardly rounded or bulged portion, substantially as described and shown.
7. A plow protector havingits forward end upturned forming a clamp for the plow point and having in rear of said upturned end portion an upwardly projected portion or bend, substantially as set forth.
S. A plow protector having means for clamping the plow and its body portion or bottom rounded between its ends forming a rocker like support, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
f). A plow protector having at its forwar end a clamping portion for the plow point notched to receive such plow point, substantially as sct forth.
l0. A plow protector having an upturned forward end provided in the extremity of said end with notched seats side byside to receive right and left hand plows, substantially as set forth.
ll. A plow protector having at its rear end an elevated supportingportion notched to receive the land-side, substantially as set forth.
12. A plow protector having at its rear end an elevated supporting portion provided with a notch or slot to receive the land side and having wedge seats in the walls of said slot, substantially as set forth.
