NITED STATES PATENT CEEICE..4
GEORGE A. WELCH,- OE MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.-
lLAMP-cl-lm/INEY HOLDER..
srEcIEIcATIoN forming part or Letters Patent 1ro. 545,562, dated september 3,1895.
Application filed December 12, 1893. Serial No. 493,483. (No modelfll To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WELCH, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Lamp-Chimney Holders, of which the following is a specification.v
My invention relates to improvements in the holders of chimneys for lamps used for domestic and other purposes and embraces a method of securely retaining the chimney upon the lamp when inuse and providing for its ready detachment for cleansing, lighting, or similar purposes.
My invention consists, essentially, of a series of guides, (preferably four,) to which are attached a pair (or more) of spring-actuated spreaders or grips of wire, so peculiarly constructed as normally to press upon'the interior outwardly-curved surface of the chimney in such a manner as to prevent the release of said chimney except by determined effort, and, secondly, in combination with the above, of a flexible series of links for the purpose of preventing an undue spreading of the grips.
In the drawings accompanying this specilication, Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, showing my invention applied to an ordinary lamp-burner.
In the views, in which similar letters refer to similar parts, the vertical portions of the curved wires A, riveted or otherwise attached to the base B, constitute the guides by which the chimney is held in position concentric with the burner. The horizontal portion of the wire, curved as shown, if necessary, serves as a pivotal bearing for the spreaders G, as
well as a fulcrum for the coiled spring S. The spreaders or grips G, also of wire,.are so constructed that their upper and bowed portion shall conform to the interior outwardlycurving portion ofthe chimney and are provided at each extremitywith an eye for their attachment to the guides G in such a manner as will permit a vibratory movement. The coiled-Wire springs- S, or their equivalent, intermediately connecting the spreaders G with the guides A, are of such tensional strength as to secure such outward pressure of the spreaders G as to' prevent the detachment of the chimney except by an abnormal counteracting inuence, such as a deliberate movement intended to detach the same.
The spreaders G are connected with each other by means of a flexible series of links or a chain L for the purpose of limiting the out` ward and downward movement of the grips or spreaders when released by the removal of the chimney, thus facilitating the reattainment of such a position as to readily admit the replacement of the chimney.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lamp chimney holder-two guides mounted upon the burner, each guide having -a curved horizontal portion, U-shaped wire grips so mounted upon said horizontal portions as to normally press outward in opposite directions, substantially as specified.
