SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,425, dated April 30, 1 895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, COOPER N. LANSING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, Albany county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Pressers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,suoh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved garment presser, especially designed for pressing trousers.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan View of one form of my device; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof, taken on line A A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of another form with a pair of trousers in press therein, and Fig. 4 a cross section of a form thereof showing another method of securing the top boards.

The numeral 1 shows the bottom board or foundation of the device which preferably consists of a board of sufficient stiffness to withstand any strain likely to be given it by the pressure devices; 2, 2, showing the top boards, which are preferably beveled on the under side and preferably linked or held together by devices such as screw eyes 3, 3, or

In Fig. 11 show straps 8, 8 attached to the bottom board 1 and to cams 5, 5, one of the cams having a handle 6, the cams being attached to a movable rod 4, 4, and having a catch 7, 7, which is arranged to catch the handle 6 and hold it in position after the straps 8. 8. have been drawn taut by means of the cams thus bringing a sufficient amount of pressure to bear on the top boards 2, 2, to press the garment.

The device shown in Fig. 1 is intended for use in clothing stores and to be of sufficient length to receive a pair of trousers when laid out at full length, it being understood that several pairs'may be inserted at the same time.

In Fig. 3 I show another form arranged for home and travelers use, and show the top boards 2, 2, held in place by a metal clasp 9 having bolts with winged ends 10, the bolts working through nuts attached to the clasp 9 so that when the bolts are turned down they will press downward on the top boards and create the desired pressure.

In Fig. 4 I show still another form of fastening device consisting of metal strips 8. 8. with slots'in their outerends and similar strips 13 with eye holes in their outer ends and bolts 10 attached to pieces 13 preferably so the bolts will swing and having winged nuts 10 to be turned after the bolt 10 has been entered in the slot in the end of strip 8.

The operation is as follows: Referring to Fig. 1, a pair of trousers are laid at full length on the bottom board 1, so that the seams will lie one above the other and in the open space between the top boards 2, 2, (several pairs may be introduced at the same time.) The handles 5, 5, are now turned down which draws the straps 8. 8. tight and presses the trousers, the seams in the legs which form a firm and elevated ridge, lying in the space between boards 2, 2, so that they are not pressed, but the folded edges 12 are pressed and form the usual crease down the fore and rear part of the legs and press out the rest of the legs as smoothly as if they had been ironed and pressed by a tailor. Referring to Fig. 3 the trousers are folded as before, except that the legs are folded over lengthwise at about the knees, leaving the bottoms of the legs under about the middle of the top boards 2, 2, and a round stick or other body 15 is inserted at the fold to prevent a wrinkle at that point, when the top boards 2, 2 are made to press downward by means of the bolts 10 when the seams in the trousers will occupy the open space between the top boards and the usual crease up and down the front and rear of the legs will be produced as with the device shown in Fig. 1,the device shown in Fig. 3 being provided for home use, and having a hook 11 bywhich itmay be hung in a closet or it may be put in'a trunk as may be desired.

I do not confine myself to any particular manner of creating a pressure of the top boards nor to the manner shown of uniting them,as they may be united or not as may be desired.

\Vhat I do claim is- 1. A garment presser consisting of a base and a plurality of top pieces arranged to lie apart leaving an open space between them, said top pieces being hinged together and having clamping devices arranged to clamp or press the top pieces in order that a garment placed between the base and top pieces may be pressed and the seams or firm portions lie in the space between the top pieces and rest there practically without pressure substantially as described.

2. A garment presser consisting of a bottom and a movable top arranged to receive one or more garments between them, said top having an opening extending the length thereof in which the seams or firm portions of the garment may rest practically without pressure and having clamping devices arranged to clamp or press the top upon the garments in order that said garments may be pressed smooth and have predetermined creases therein except at the seams substantially as described.

3. A garment presser consisting of a bottom and a movable top arranged to receive one or more garments between them, said top having an opening extending the length thereof in which the scams or firm portions of the garment may rest practically without pressure and having clamping devices arranged to clamp or press the top upon the garments substantially as herein shown and described.
