HENRY A. FOWLER AND JOHN H. LIN GLEY, OF \VORGES'IER, MASSACHU- SETTS.
CURTAIN-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,273, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed January 23, 1892. Serial No. 419,087- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY A. FOWLER and JOHN H. LINGLEY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have jointlyinvented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and showing a-curtaiu-rod embodying our invention.
Figure 1 represents a curtain rod embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central sectional view of that portion of the rod represented in Fig. 1 between the lines 1, l and 2, 2. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the sliding spindle, spiral spring and a portion of the tube actuated by said spring, and Fig. 4 is a central sectional view of the tips.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the difierent figures.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 represents a View of a completed ourtain rod embodying ourinvention, A denoting an outer tube having a tip B attached to one end of the tube and provided with an enlarged surface B to rest against the side of the window casing.
The outer tube A is provided with a slot 0 having upon one side the notches 0.
Within the tube A is a spindle D, capable of sliding within the tube A and having at one end a collar,by which it is held concentrically within the tube and projecting from the collar D is a pin D entering the slot 0 and by a slight rotation of the spindle D the pin D is capable of being carried into any one of the notches, thereby locking the spindle D from sliding within the tube.
The opposite end of the spindle D enters the tube E, which slides Within the outer tube A and also upon the spindle D.
The tube E is provided with a slot E to receive a pin E held in the spindle D.
Between the end of the tube E and the collarD is a spiral spring F acting against the collar D and the tube E to hold the tube against the pinE The outer end of the tube F carries a detachable tip G which enters the tube E and can be readily removed to allow the curtain to be placed upon the curtain rod.
In use the spindle D is turned within the tube A by means of the inner tube E until the projecting pin D is released from a notch C and brought into the slot 0 thereby allowing the spindle D and inner tube E to be moved within the outer tube A until the distance between the bearing surfaces B, G, of the tips is slightly greater than the distance between the window casings. The tube E is then rotated by turning the spindle D in order to carry the pin D into one of the notches C, so as to limit the sliding movement of the spindle D. The tube E is then pushed into the tube A compressing. the spring F until the tips B and Gr are brought between the window casings when the tension of the spring F will be applied to hold the curtain rod in place by the pressure of the surfaces B, and G against the window casings.
The curtain is applied to the rod before it is placed in position by removing the detachable tip G and sliding the curtain rings, or the hem of the curtain, over the tubes Aand E; the end H of the outer tube A being provided with a thin edge to allow the curtain to slide freely from the tube E upon the tube A.
We are aware that it is not new to provide a curtain rod with a spring actuated tip, or to make the parts of a curtain rod telescopic, and having the tension of a spring applied to extend the rod and cause its ends, or tips, to be held against the opposing sides of a window casing by frictional resistance. Neither is it new to make one part of the rod tubular, and having a slot and a series of notches upon one side of the slot to inclose the other portion in said tube and provide it with a. pin, arranged to interlock said notches and hold the inclosed part from sliding within the tube.
Both of the above named features were shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 468,987, and we do not herein claim such.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. In a curtain rod, the combination with the tube A and tip B, carried by the end of said tube, of a spindle .D inclosed within said tube, a collar D attached to said spindle-and to said tube, whereby the spindle is held from longitudinal movement, and concentrically within said tube, a tube E with one end sliding on said spindle and inclosed within said tube A, a spring between said fixed collar D and the end of said tube E, and a tip G carried by the opposite end of said tube E, substantially as described.
2. In acurtain rod, the combination with a tube A and tip B, said tube having a longitudinal slot 0, and a series of notches O in one side of said slot, of a spindle D incl'osed within said tube A, a collar D attached to said spindle, by which it is'held concentrically within said tube, a pin D projecting radially from said collar and adapted to be carried in one of said notches by the-partial rotation of said spindle, a tube E provided with a slot E and having one end inclosing said spindle and inclosed by said tube A, a spring placed 7 between said fixed collar D and theend of said tube E, a tip G carried by the opposite tube A, and a tip carried by the end'of said tube, of a spindle D inclosed within said tube A, a collar D' attached to one end of said spindle and also to said tube A, whereby said spindle is held concentrically, and from longitudinal movement within said tube, a pin E projecting radially from the opposite end of said tube, a tube E having one end sliding over said spindle and inclosed within said tube A, a spring F between the end of said tube E and said fixed collar D' with its tension applied to push the tube E off the spindle, said tube E having a longitudinal slot E inclosing said pin E with the end of said slot closed so as to limit the sliding motion of said tube E as actuated by said spring and prevent said tube E and said spindle from becoming disconnected and a removable tip G carried by the outer end of said tube E to allow the curtain rod to receive a curtain, substantially as described.
