SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,382, dated September 25, 1894.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, ADDISON CONKLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented cert'ain new and useful Improvements in Inkstand-Brackets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object to provide a convenient bracket adapted to be readily attached to the shelves of a roll top or other desk, which bracket will be of such construction that the ink-stand supported thereby may be readily adjusted to any desired position, and may be swung backward beneath the shelves when not in use; my invention having also for its object to provide, for use in connection with said bracket, an ink-stand which may readily beinserted into the forked end of the bracket, and in such a manner that it will always remain in a horizontal po sition notwithstanding the different adjustments of the bracket. I also preferably provide, in connection with said ink-stand, apenrack of cheap construction which willbe sustained by one of the supports of the ink-stand and which will always remain horizontal with the ink-stand whatever may be the positions of adjustment of the latter. My improved bracket is also preferably provided with a calendar holder.

In carrying my invention into effect I'provide a metal clip or clamp preferably having an opening of such construction that it may be fixedly connected with the shelf of the desk without the use of a binding set screw, the said clip or clamp being preferably lined with leather or other soft material, or a strip of leather or other soft material maybe used in connection therewith, to give it a proper hold upon the shelf to which it is to be attached. To the arm of the said clip is swiveled, by a vertical pivot, a hanger to which is jointed, by a horizontal pivot, one end of a link forming one arm of the bracket, and the other end of said link is jointed, also by a horizontal pivot, to the other or ink-stand supporting arm of the bracket, the free end of which latter is forked and provided with inwardly extending pivot pins to engage and support the ink-stand; the horizontal pivot pins by which the two portions of the bracket are connected together and by which the firstnamed portion of said bracket is connected to the said hanger, being threaded and provided With clamping thumb nuts so that the two arms of the bracket may be fixed in any desired relation to each other and to the hanger depending from the clip or clamp.

To provide for the ready insertion of the ink-stand into the fork of the bracket said inkstand is provided on its opposite sides with grooves which may be cut or molded therein,

and which grooves are open at the bottom of the ink-stand and extend upward to a point near the top of the latter, or about two-thirds of the way up from the bottom so that the shoulders at the tops of said grooves, when the ink-stand is inserted into the fork of the bracket, are engaged by the pins projecting inward from the arms of said fork, said pins thus supporting the ink-stand pivotally so that it will normally (owing to the overloalancing weight of the ink-stand belowits point of support) remain in a horizontal position, whatever may be the position of adjustment of the arms of the bracket.

I also provide a pen-rack which isto be hung to one of the pivotal supports of the ink-stand and which pen-rack, preferably, has struck-up lugs in its back to enage the ink-stand, and thus the pen-rack will always remain in a horizontal position with the inks't'and.

I also preferably provide, in connection with my improved inkstand supportingbracket, a calendar support placed rearward of the inkstand, and in which a frame, adapted to hold monthly calendar cards, is pivotally hung at points above its center of gravity so that said calendar holding frame will normally assume a vertical position in the different positions of adjustment of the are detail views of the pivot support for the calendar holder.

A denotes a clip or clamp consisting of a piece of metal bent over upon itself with the two portions thereof a suitable distance apart so that the said clip is adapted to be readily engaged with a shelf a of the desk to which the bracket is to be attached, the distance between the two arms of the said clip or clamp being, preferably, slightly greater than the thickness ,of the shelf a, to which it is to be attached so that the said clip may be lined with leather or other soft material a, or so that a strip of such material may be used in engaging the clip with the shelf.

B denotes a hanger swiveled to the lower portion of the clip A by a vertical pivot b, which is preferably permanently attached to said clip by forming a slight countersink in the latter, and by slightly upsetting the top end of said pivot in said countersink, leaving, however,- the said pivot free to turn in its seat in said clip.

The hanger B is provided with a horizontal pivot pin 1) adapted to pass freely through a hole formed in the rounded end a of a link 0 forming one portion of the bracket, said pin 1) being threaded for the reception of a thumbnut b by which the arm 0 may be clamped in any desired position of adjustment relative to said hanger B. The rounded outer end of the arm 0 is provided with a horizontal pivot pin 0 which passes freely through a hole in the end d of the arm D forming the other portion of the bracket, said pin being also threaded for the reception of the thumb-nut d by which the arm D may be held in any desired position of adjustment relative to the arm 0. The arm D is provided at its outer or free end with a fork at having inwardly extending horizontal pins or pivots d which are to serve as supports for the inlc.

stand E, said ink-stand being provided in its opposite side with grooves 6 open at their bottoms and terminating at their tops somewhat above the vertical center of the inkstand, the walls at the upper ends of said grooves forming shoulders to be engaged by the said pins d so that the latter will pivotally support the ink-stand in such position that it will, by gravity, remain in a horizontal position, whatever may be the position of adjustment of the arm'D by which the said ink-stand is supported.

F denotes a pen-rack which is shown as hung to one of the pins 01 and which is preferably provided with indented or struck-out lugsf for engagement with the corners of the ink stand so that the said pen-rack will remain in a horizontal position with the said ink-stand.

The arm D is preferably provided, just rear ward of the fork (1 with a socket d which is to receive the standard 9 of a calendar supporting-frame G in which is hung, preferably by pivots h, a calendar holder H adapted to dar-holder H is pivoted above its center so that it will normallyhang vertically whatever maybe the position of adjustment of the arm D of the ink-stand supporting-bracket, and

to be swung horizontally to any desired convenient position, and when not in use the inkstand may be swung backward beneath the shelf or entirely out of the way. The inkstand is readily insertedin the fork d of the bracket by slipping said ink-stand downward into said bracket until the pivot pins d engage the shoulders at the upper ends of the grooves e in the sides of the ink-stand. It will thus be understood that with the vertical pivot b by which the hanger B is swiveled to the clip A and by reason of the horizontal pivots by which the parts of the bracket are connected and by which the arm 0 is jointed to the said hanger the ink-stand may be adjusted to any desired vertical or horizontal position for the convenience of the user.

Owing to the fact that the parts of my improved bracket, and also the pen-rack and calendar-holder, are of such construction that they may be readily stamped out of sheet metal the whole apparatus may be very cheaply constructed so that it can be sold at a very small price, while the various adj ustments of which the bracket is capable will render the same very convenient for the user.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the clip A adapted to be engaged with a shelf or other support, of the hangerB swiveled to the lower part of said clip by a vertical pivot, and the arms 0 and D, the said arm 0 being connected with the said hanger by a horizontal pivot, and the said arms being also connected together by a horizontal pivot, said horizontal pivots being both provided with clamping thumb-nuts so that said arms may be secured in any desired position of adjustment and the said arm D being provided at its free end with a fork d furnished with inwardly projecting pins for engagement with an ink-stand to be hung that said arms may be secured in any desired position of adjustment, and the arm D being provided atits free end with a fork d furnished with inwardly projecting pinsfor engagement with anink -stand to be hung therein, and the said arm D being provided with a socket, the calendar support G sustained in said socket, and the calendar holder H having horizontal pivot connections with said support G.

3. The combination with the clip A adapted to be engaged with a shelf or other support, of the hanger B swiveled to the lower part of said clip by a vertical pivot, the arms 0 and D, the former connected with the said hanger by a horizontal pivot, and the said arms being also connected together by a horizontal pivot, said horizontal pivots being both provided with clamping thumb-nuts so that said arms may be secured in any desired position of adjustment, the said arm D being provided at its free end with a fork d furnished with inwardly projecting pins for engagement with an ink-stand to be hung therein, and the pen rack F also supported from said fork and provided with lugs for engagement with the inkstand so as to remain in a horizontal position with the latter.

4. The combination with a clip A adapted to be engaged with a shelf or other support, of the hanger B swiveled to the lower part of said clip by a vertical pivot, the arms 0 and D, the former connected with the said hanger by a horizontal pivot, and the said arms being also connected together by a horizontal pivot, said horizontal pivots being both provided with clamping thumb-nuts so that said arms may be secured in any desired position of adjustment, the said arm D being provided at its free end with a fork d furnished with inwardly projecting pins, and an ink-stand having slots in its opposite sides to be entered by said pins, said slots extending from the bottom of said ink-stand to points above the vertical center of the same so that said inkstand will normally remain in a horizontal position whatever may be the position ofadjnstment of the jointed arms of the said bracket.

5. The combination with the clip A adapted to beengaged with a shelf or other support, of the hanger B swiveled to the lower part of said clip by a vertical pivot, and the arms 0 and D, the said arm 0 being connected with the said hanger by a horizontal pivot, and the said arms being also connected together by a horizontal pivot, said horizontal pivots being both provided with clamping thumbnuts so that said arms may be secured in any desired position of adjustment and the said arm D being provided at its free end with a fork d adapted to pivotallysupport an inkstand.
