UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. BEERS AND HERBERT O. HOWLAND, OF RHINELANDER, WIS- CONSIN; SAID BEERS ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT O. HOWLAND, OF OSHKOSH,
WISCONSIN.
SClSSORS-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,397, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed December 29, 1892- Serial No.456,641. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. BEERs and HERBERT O. HOWLAND, of Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors-Sharpeners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to providea reliable and satisfactory device for sharpening scissors, which device shall, involve a minimum of expense, shall be neat and attractive in appearance so as to be suitable to lie on a ladys work-table, and shall be of such form' as to be adapted for ready and successful use even by persons but slightly skilled in handling mechanical devices.
Ourimproved device adapted to accomplish these objects, consists of the implement constructed of the material and in the form and manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing exhibits our improved device.
Scissors and analogous implements have 2 5 cutting edges formed of hardened steel, and a tool or device that is capable of abrading or wearing away the edge of the blade of a pair of scissors, must necessarily be of hard material and preferablyvharder than the steel of 0 which the edge of the blade is made.
Our improved sharpener is made of glass of hardness known to exceed that of steel, and it consists of the body part A, and the handle B preferably separated by the annu- 3 5 lar groove or channel 0. The body part A is of elongated cone form and its surface is evenly roughened, conveniently by grinding or some similar process. This surface of the body part thus roughened,is adapted to and 0 will abrade or wear away and thus sharpen the edge of a scissors blade when properly applied thereto.
To sharpen a pair of scissors with our improved device, the sharpener is held in one 5 hand by its handle, the body A projecting from the hand, and the scissors taken in the other hand in the manner in which scissors are held when used for cutting, are opened wide and the sharpener is placed between the blades at an angle thereto and the scissors are then closed as in cutting cloth or other material thus pressing the edges of both the blades against and drawing them across the roughened surface of the body of the sharpener. This operation serves to grind or abrade the flat substantially opposite edges of the blades, which edges as is well known are (in cross section) at an angle slightly acute to the flat inner sides or faces of the blades, thus bringing the very edge of the b1ade,at the intersection of the inner face of the blade with the flat oblique edges to sharpness along the entire line of the blade. By repeating this process several times a satisfactory keen cutting edge may quickly be put on the blades, even by persons but little accustomed to the use of sharpening implements.
The handle B is preferably cylindrical in form and is separated from the body A byan 7o annular groove 0. The annular grooves D provide for a firmer and surer clasping of the handle by the hand of the user of the implement, and may be used to receive a cord about the handle and tied thereto, to suspend the sharpener from a belt or other convenient support.
Whatwe claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A scissors sharpener constructed integrally of glass harder than steel and adapted by moving contact across the edges of the blades of scissors to abrade and sharpen them, which sharpener consists of an elongated substantially cone-shaped body having an evenly. 85 roughened surface, as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. BEERS. HERBERT O. HOWLAND.
