Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,167, dated June 19, 1847.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADDISON SMITH, of Perrysburg, in the county of WVood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Register to be Used in Long Measure, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all. other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical view of the apparatus applied to a counter, and Fig. 2, a plan with the dial or face removed showing the interior.

The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

The nature of my invention consists in applying a thumb piece on a level with the counter on which a yard or other measure is marked at the end of said measure so that as the thumb piece is depressed every time a yard is measured it moves a hand with which it is connected by proper gearing around the face of the dial indexed so as to show the number of yards measured.

The construction is as follows: On the inner edge of a counter (a) next to where the shopman stands I aflix a metal box (5) which is let in flush with the top and edge of the counter, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. In this figure (b) is the box, (0) the face of the index, (d) the hand or pointer, (e) the thumb piece; this thumb piece rests on top of the bent lever (f) and is attached to the end of a spring not shown in the drawing that is placed under it and connects it to the case (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1), the lower arm of this lever is connected with a pawl (it) that works into a ratchet wheel on a vertical shaft which shaft passes up through the center of the index plate and has the hand (03) on the end of it. By this arrangement it will be seen that every time the thumb piece is depressed it turns the ratchet wheel one notch and registers the yard or other measure indicated. There is an additional hand or pawl (m) catching on the ratchet wheel which acts as a stop to hold all that is made by the index hand this pawl and the movable lever (f) are kept up to their places by springs (a, n) properly arranged for that purpose as will be obvious to any competent workman.

A small thumb piece (0) may project through the case at the front edge which is so connected with the pawl or hand that when pressed in, it relieves the wheel (2') which is then drawn back by a spiral spring (p), around the shaft (is) till the hand (cl) is at zero on the index.

It is obvious that many mechanical arrangements can be employed to produce substantially the same results, combined with a movable thumb piece at the end of the measure several of which I have already devised, but all produce the same result, viz; that of registering the number of yards measured; therefore,

WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The employment of a movable thumb piece at the end of a long measure substantially as described, connected by proper machinery with a movable index so as to register the lengths measured.
