UNITED STATES PATENT CFFI E.
JOHN DANNER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,603, dated November- 14,1893.
Application shant 9,1893. seq-t1 No- 473,616L (No mod m To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DANNER, a citizen of the United States, and a-resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Table and Writing-Cabinet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved article of manufacture, and consists in pro viding a combined so called center table writing cabinet and book holder, adapted for use in parlor, library or study, and consists of certain featuresof construction and combination as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
. Figure 1, is a view in perspective of a table illustrating my invention when closed. Fig. 2, is a similar View of the npperportion of the table with sidelet down disclosing a cabinet or series of so called pigeon holes. Fig.
3, is a similar view showing the writing leaf drawn out and the pigeon holes drawn to the front, and Fig. 4, is a transverse section.
Referring to Fig. 1, A represents the top or body of the table which for the purpose of this application is a parallelogram in form having parallel sides and ends, but other forms may be adopted when preferred. The top B of the table is flat and unbroken adapted to support such articles as are usually seen on a parlor or library table. 'lheleading'feature of my invention consists in providing in such table, a complete writing desk or cabinet that may be instantly brought into service without the necessity of removing or in terfering with the articles on the top of the table; 0, represents the frontpanel or side which is hinged to strut or bottom board D.
In Fig. 2, this panel is shown as folded out and down to a line parallel with the top B, and is supported in such-position by arms E, having elongated apertures a, engaging pivots 17, secured to the outer edge portion of the table as shown and adapted to slide under the top B; on the lower inside of the arms E is provided outwardly projected lugs o.
On the outer end portions of the panel 0 is provided aleveling blockd the upper surface of which is in line with lower face of the writing slidable leaf F, which when drawn forward or out passes between the block 01 and the projection c, on the arms E, the block to support the writing leaf F, in horizontal position a distance above the panel C, which with the arms E holds said table in operative position, the inner side resting against the under side of the cabinet. Thelugs c are provided to prevent the raising or folding up of the leaf F by contact of the outer edge with the person, or otherwise.
At each end of the table is provided'a slide 6 on which is supported cabinet G, consisting of a series of pigeon holes or compartments 72. that may be varied in form. The under or bottom board k of said cabinet (see Fig. 4) is provided at the end portions thereof with transverse grooves Z, in which is projected from the table F, studs or pins m that engage the ends of the groove Z to move the cabinet forward and back a distance when the table F is drawn out or moved back, leaving a portion of the table projecting in front of the cabinet when it is passed to the rear of the body of the table A.
When desired asa writing desk, the panel 0 is unlocked and turned down as shown in Fig. 2; the leaf F is drawn out from under the cabinet a distance, the pins engaging the ends of the grooves Zwill draw the cabinet forward to the .position shown in Fig. 3, and when the said leaf F is moved into the body of the table A, the pins m will engage the rear end of the groovel and move the cabinet back to the opposite side, leaving an open space in front of the cabinet on the front edge of the slide leaf F, when said slide table is moved back into-the body of the table A. There is also provided under the body of the table A connected to and supported by the legs H a shelf J having a central portion 72 open to the front and upward and end portions 0, opening out at the ends, and above said end portions, shelves p as shown in Fig. 1, all of which are adapted to hold such books as may be desired.
Having thus fully described the nature and object-of my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In anew article of manufacture the combination of the supporting legs H and body A, of the panel C hinged to said body, and
ICO
provided with leveling block (1, arms E, having elongated apertures a and side projections 0, pivotally secured to the slide and the panel C, a slidable table F, adapted to pass between the panel C and the leveling block, and the projection c, on the arms E, the cabinet G having grooves l, on the under side thereof, pins m, projected from said slidable slide into said grooves, whereby said cabinet may be movcdin said table, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a table of the foldable side panel C, the top B, having thereunder a cabinet consisting of a series of compartments or divisions, adapted to slide transverse the body of the table and a slidable leaf
