UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
OHARLES L. POVELL, OF \VEATHERFORD, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PATRICK F. BRANNAN, OF SAME PLACE.
lSNUF F-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lfatent No. 498,695, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed January 31, 189 Serial No.460,330. (N model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CHARLES L. POWELL,
- p of Weatherford, inthe county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Snuff-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in snufi boxes.
It is a common practice, in many parts of the country, for people to carry snuff about their persons and to eat it occasionally or to apply it to the teeth, and this is done by means of a tooth-brush which is dipped into the snuff and then rubbed across the teeth. Where the brush is separate from the box, it is likely to get lost and, moreover, thesnuff which adheres to it soils the clothing if the brush is I carried in the pocket.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple snuif box in which the snulf may be conveniently packed for shipment and sale; and which is also adapted to carry the brush 7 so that it is kept out of contact with the snufi and with the clothing, and to provide means for ejecting, the brush handle when the box is openso that it may be conveniently grasped and used.
' To these ends my invention consists in a snuff box, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved snuff box with the cover thereon and with the brush therein. Fig. 2 is a similar section, but with the cover raised and the brush partially ejected; and Fig.3 is a plan view of the box with the cover removed.
The box 10 may be of any approved shape and of any suitable material, but it is preferably cylindrical and of sheet metal. It is provided with a removable cover 11, and within the box, preferably near one side, is a cham- -the box, as shown in Fig.1.
The chamber12 is adapted to receive a tooth I handle 16, and the length of the handle is such Y brush 15 which is provided with a suitable that when the cover is removed and the plunger l3 raised by the spring 14, the upper portion of the handle will project from the box so that it may be conveniently grasped. The
snuff is packed in the box around the chamber 12, as shown in Fig. 2, and as the chamber extends the whole length or height of the box, no snuff can get into the chamber. The brush is held within the box, and when the cover 11 is applied, the brush is pushed downward into When, however, the cover is removed, the brush is forced upward by the spring 1 The brush is used in the ordinary way; that is, it is first dipped into the snuff and then rubbed across the teeth.
It will be understood that the box may be made of any desired size and of any necessary or suitable shape.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a snuff box having a removable cover, a brushholding chamber within the box and extending the full length of the latter, and a springpressed plunger arranged within the chamber and adapted to eject the brush, substantially as described.
CHARLES L. POWELL.
