My invention has relation to improvements in heels for boots or shoes, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l, is a vertical, longitudinal section of a portion of ashoe illustrating my improved heel connected thereto. Fig. 2, is a top plan View of the heel removed from the shoe, and Fig. 8, is a vertical transverse section, taken in the plane indicated by the line -x of Fig. 2.

In the said drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, referring to which- A, indicates my improved heel, which is preferably formed from a suitable metal and comprises the side walls ot, the front wall h, and the bottom plate c, which is detachably connected to the side and front walls by means of extensions g and is preferably formed from steel and has its lower side milled or roughened so as to better with-stand frictional wear. The side walls a, of the heel which are connected to the sole by nails as shown, are provided at their upper ends with the inwardly-directed flanges d, which are concave, as shown, so as to more perfectly fit and conform to the surface of the sole of the boot or shoe, while the front Wall b, is provided with a forwardly extended iiange e, which is also concave and is provided with apertures at intervals in its length for the passage of' clinch nails, through the medium of which the forward portion of the heel is connected to the sole of the shoe.

Suitably connected to or formed integral with the upper side of the bottom plate c, is a series of angular keeper lugs f, which are recessed in their inner sides, as shown, and

are designed to receive and hold the coil spring B, as better illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings. This coil spring B, which extends slightly above the upper edges of the heel, as

shown, surrounds a stud h, upon the lower side of the insole O, and serves to yieldingly sustain said insole, whereby it will be readily perceived that the heel of a person will be cushioned and the objectionable jar incidental to 6o walking prevented. This insole O, which is preferably formed from rubber, or leather, is

connected to the heel A, by the nails which connect the same to the sole, and is suitably connected to or formed integral with the shank of the shoe, as is most desirable.

In the practice of my invention ll design making the metallic parts of my improved heel of such a metal and thickness that while the same will firmly support the weight of a 7o person, it will not add materially to the weight of the shoe.

From the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the drawings, it will be readily perceived that I have' provided a me 75 tallic heel of an exceedingly cheap and simple construction adapted to cushion the shoe and prevent the objectionable jar when the `foot is placed upon the ground during walking.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, what 8o I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a boot or shoe, a heel consisting of a hollow shell having surrounding walls, provided with an inwardly extending iiange about its three `side Walls, and a forwardly extending flange, projecting from its front Wall on its upper edges, and extensions on its lower portions, and a bottom plate detachably secured to said extensions and having lugs formed on 9o its upper face portion, a coiled spring connected by its lower coil to said lugs, in combination with a yielding insole having a circular projection on its lower face, with the `upper coil of said spring inclosing the same, 95
