HORSE-BOOT;

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,820, dated October 25, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. RAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cleveland, Ouyahoga county, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 1H1- provements in Quarter-Boots for Horses, of which the following is a description.

The nature of my improvements relates to a boot which is particularly used in training racehorses, the object of said improvements being to provide a boot which may be easily weighted heavy or light by movable weights, as may be required, as hereinafter fully set forth. Italso protects the foot in case the horse interferes.

That my invention may be seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming a part thereof.

Figure 1 is a side view of a horses foot, showing the application of the boot. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the boot with a portion of the pocket broken away, showing the weight therein. Fig. 3 is afront view of the boot closed, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sect-ion thereof.

Like letters denote like parts in the drawings and specification.

The body or main portion a of the boot is of heavy felt or other suitable material, so formed as to fit snugly to the foot or hoof b, Fig. 1. A roll 0 is formed on the upper edge to prevent the edge from chafing the pasternjoint. Around the lower part of the boot is arranged one or more pockets d, Figs. 1 and 2, made, preferably, of leather. This pocket may be continuous around theboot or formed in sections, as indicated at d (F, and attached to the boot. Within d is inserted a weight 6, Figs. 2 and 4, which Weight may be readily withdrawn and one of less or more Weight inserted, as required, or the boot may be worn without Weight.

In Fig. 2 the boot is shown open for being placed around the foot and pastern-joint, as indicated in Fig. 1. The lap fis provided With openings g, g, and h, which extend over the edge The strapj is arranged to pass through the opening it and the loops 70 Z, registering with the said openings 9 g. The lower loop Z also registers with an opening in the end of the pocket cl.

The weights may be of any suitable metal, lead being preferred, because of its flexibility conforming to the circular form of boot and hoof.

\Vhen more than one pocket is made, as indicated in Fig. 1 at 61' 61 then the weights are in sections and put in the pocketstwo or more, as may be required in the weight and size for the pockets and use.

A narrow strap m may pass around the boot below the roll 0, Fig. 3, and extending under the strap j and the. terminals buckled together, as shown at 'n. This strap m is to relieve the strain of the boot from the foot when extra heavy weight is in the pocket or pockets and used in training the horse.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a quarter-boot for horses, the body a, terminating at the top in a roll 0 and having one or-more pockets (1 in the base of said body, in combination with one or more flexible movable weights within the pockets, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a quarter-boot for horses, the body at, having one or more pockets for the reception of adjustable Weights at the base and the roll 0 at the top, in combination with a lap having the openings g, g, and h therein, the strap j, and loops is andl, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
