LEATH'ER-SPLICING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,052, dated April 5, 1892. Application iiled May 11, 1891. Serial No. 392,338. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that' I, NATHAN B. HOLDS- WORTH, residing at Spencerville, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Leather-Splicing Device, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates toan improved leather-splicing device, such as can be employed to secure the ends of belts, harness-sections, and the like; and it is `the object of my invention to produce a device of this character which can be employed in a variety of ways and one which is exceedingly cheap, neat, durable, and easy of application.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the several parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and designated in the appended claim.
In the drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a view of the blank, showing the particular shape of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe blank bent ready for use; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show the different modes of applying and using my improved fastening device. Figs. 3a, 4a, and 5a are longitudinal sectional views taken from the views 3, 4, and 5, respectively.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates my improved fastening or splicing device, which is made of a single piece of sheet or thin wrought iron or steel having considerable flexibility and elasticity. said aperture' being essentially. seniicircular in shape, the straight side being arranged adjacent to and parallel with the end of the blank. About midway the length of the blankit is bent or rounded upon itself, as shown at a', and about midway between the bend o. and the reduced end of the blank it is bent again toward the broad end of the same, the reduced end approximatingsaid broad end, but not touching the same.
The manner of applying and using my iinproved fastener or splicer is clearly shown by Figs. 3, 4, 5, 3, 4', and 5f.
In Figs. 3 and 3 I have shown my device employed to connect the ends of a belt, the fasteners A being applied to the ends of the belt by passing the reduced ends through apertures made in the belt near its ends. The broad ends are then bent down upon the 5 reduced ends, said reduced ends being passed v through the perforations d, and are clinched upon the ends of the blanks. The bends a. are thus left projecting beyond the ends of the belt, and they are assembled to form a continuous socket for the reception of the locking-bolt B, which securely unites the two ends of the belt, and it will be seen that by the tapering shape of the blanks I am enabled to provide a superior fastening, the reduced end fitting snugly into the perforation, and also the blanks may be arranged alternately to form a superior hinge.
In Figs. 4 and 4a I have shown the ends of a belt united in a similar manner, except that a loop or bail B is employed instead of the bolt B.
In Figs. 5 and 5 I have shown my device applied to unite the ends of a belt-strap, piece of harness, or the like without the aid of auxiliary appliances, this being done by passing the reduced end through both ends to be united and then clinching, as before described. It will be noticed that by bending the blank at the points indicated and securing the reduced end, as above described, the portion between the bend a2 and reduced end forms an acute angle with the broad end, within which the leather is held, and the greater the longitudinal strain on the leather the more, 85 binding the action of the clinched end.
What I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, a leather-splicing. device formed of a tapering metallic blank struck up into an approximately V-shaped form, the tapering end being bent inwardly at an angle to the body and the broad end provided with an aperture opposing said inturned end, said aperture being straight at its outer edge and curved at 95 its -rear edge, whereby said 'inturned end is guided therein, substantially as and for thc purpose set forth.
