Description

(No Model.) J Y J. H. STUTT. MEASURING FAUOET.
No. 470,881. Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
0* umlilllllfik I 9 UNITED STATES PATENT 0FFICE JOHN H. STUTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB J. BRIEGEL, OF SAME PLACE.
MEASURlNG-FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,881, dated March 15, 1892.
Serial No. 409,027. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
My invention consists of a faucet having a valve at the inlet end thereof, the stem where of is adapted to be operated at the opposite end.
It also consists in providing said stem with an additional valve and locating the same in a chamber within the barrel of the faucet, thus forming a measuring device.
It furtherconsists of novel means for opening and closing the valve or valves, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing, wherein the figure represents a longitudinal section of a faucet embodying my invention, A designates the barrel of a faucet, having at one end the valve-seat B, the valve 0 whereof is connected with a stem D, the latter passing through the barrel to the end opposite to said valve.
E designates a tubular plug, which is fitted to the head or cap F, which closes the barrel A at the discharge end of the faucet, said plug having the adjacent portion of the stem D passing freely through the same. In the side of the plug is a screw G, whose point freely enters a neck H in the end of the stem D.
A portion of the barrel A is enlarged, forming the chamber J, the ends of which toward the cap F being provided with a valve-seat K, the valve L whereof being on the stem D and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
In the barrel A, between the cap F and valve L, is a chamber M, which is provided with a discharge pipe or nozzle N at the side thereof.
Connected with the plug E is a handle P, whereby said plug may be conveniently rotated, it being seen that when said plug is rotated in one direction the stem D follows the motion thereof, whereby the valve L is closed and the valve O opened, so that fluid may enter the bore of the barrel and fill the chamber J. When the plug is rotated in opposite direction, the valve O is closed and the valve L opened. By this provision the supply of fluid is cut off, but the quantity contained in the bore of the barrel, including the chamber J, passes from the chamber J into the chamber M and is discharged through the nozzle N, it being noticed that the fluid is out off quickly at the valve O and leakage thereat is prevented. It will also be seen that as the chamber J may be of predetermined capacity, the faucet becomes a measuring device, the operation of which is effective and reliable. It will furthermore be seen that when the plug E rotates and the screw G follows the motions thereof, as the point of said screw freely enters the neck II of the stemD said stem is moved in opposite directions without being necessarily rotated, and thus the valves are prevented from turning on their seats.
In the wall of the chamber M is an air-vent Q for evident purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A faucet having a valve and valve-seat at one end, and a stem which is connected with said valve and with a plug at the end opposite to said valve, said plug being fitted to the barrel so as to be capable of move ment in opposite directions, thus opening and closing said valve, substantially as described.
2. The valve-stem provided with a neck and freely fitted at the end opposite to the valve in a plug which is movably fitted in the head of the faucet, said plug being provided with a screw whose inner end freely enters the neck of said stem, substantially as described.
3. A faucet having a measuring-chamber in the barrel thereof, a stem with valves at opposite places, each valve having a seat on the barrel, said stem being freely fitted in a plug which is movably connected with the barrel and provided with an operating-handle, substantially as described.
4. A head of a faucet having a screw-plug fitted thereto and a handle secured to said gagecl with said stein, substantially as deplug, in combination with a stem with two scribed. valves thereon, one of which is within the i r i f r1 barrel, the latter having two seats and cham- JOHN 5 bers at opposite sides of the inner valve, the Witnesses:
stein passing freely through the plug and JACOB J. BRIEGEL,
connected therewith by a screw which is en- JACOB II. SHETTER.
