J. H. EWING. ORNAMENTAL METAL PANEL FOR GEILINGS, WALLS, &c. No. 457,310. Patented Aug.4,1891.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. EIVIN G, OF \VHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE WHEEL- ING CORRUGATING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ORNAMENTAL METAL PANEL FOR CEILINGS, WALLS, 84c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,310, dated August {1, 1891.
Application filed April 28, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. EWING, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Ornamental Metal Panels for Metal Ceilings, Walls, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in metal ceiling and wall decorations by which I am enabled to form ornamental metal panels for metal ceilings, walls, &c.,havinga projecting portion upon which any suitable pattern or design may be embossed, the parts being held in place by means of flanges, and may be made of any suitable size or configuration. It is illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved panel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line II II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inserted ornamental part of the panel.
In the drawings, 2 represents the body of the panel, which may consist of a plate of sheet metal of any suitable form, size, or configuration. In order to provide it with an embossed ornament, a hole is cut in the panel of any desired form or size, and there is .inserted in the hole a piece or pieces 3, whose edges 4 are bent inwardly and are provided with horizontal flanges 5. The piece or pieces 3 are inserted in the opening of the panel 2, so that the flanges 5 shall fit in horizontal position on the inner side of the panel and shall The ornamental piece or pieces 3 may be given any suitable configura- Serial No. 390,748. (No model.)
tion, size, or desigmand may be set in place by the workman in any panel in putting up the ceiling or other metal decorations. Ob-
viously it can be made and applied with much less expense than would be necessary in shaping or embossing an entire panel, since only the comparatively small pieces need be shaped or formed with any desired figure or pattern. The advantages of my invention in respect of cheapness and easy application and its ornamental appearance will be appreciated by those skilled in the art. may be modified in various ways, principally in respect of the number of openings or means of attachment of the piece or pieces 3. The ornamental parts may be formed of one or more separate pieces.
I claim 1. An ornamental metal panel for ceiling or wall decorations, consisting of the main panel and a piece or pieces 3, adapted to be inserted therein, and having retainingfianges fitting on the inner side of the panel, substantially as and for the purposes described. 2. A metal panel for walls or ceilings, consisting of the main panel having suitable openings, in combination with an ornamental piece or pieces having retaining-flanges adapted to be inserted in such openings, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of April, A. D. 1891.
JOHN H. EWING.
