' A. BRUNNER. DOOR FASTENING.
Patented July 15, 1890.
I IIIHHI Qll llli BY mY's,
THE NORRIS PETERS 00., Puofmm'ua, wnsmnqwon, 0. c4
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON BRUNNER, OF NEWARK, NEIV JERSEY.
DOOR-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,178, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed March 25, 1890. Serial No. 345,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON BRUNNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
The objectof this invention is to produce an improved safety-fastener for a door comparatively inexpensive in construction, neat in appearance, and efiective in operation, and which will serve as a supplemental look ing device when the door is closed.
The invention consists in the improved door-fastener and the combination and arran gement of parts thereof, as hereinafter described, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts indicate similar parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved door-fastener as applied to a closed door. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, the door and door-jamb being shown in section, and Fig. 3 is a side view with the door open.
In said drawings, a indicates a plate adapted to be secured to the door, screw-holes bbeing provided for the purpose, and carrying arms 0 c, firmly and rigidly secured thereto and extending substantially parallel with the face thereof. Said plate is also provided with a keeper (Z, pivoted thereto between the front end thereof and the shoulders e of said arms, as shown in the drawings.
A plate a is adapted to be secured to the door casing or jamb, screw-holes being provided for the purpose, and carrying a barf, one end of which is pivoted or hinged to said plate at g, the hinge-pin passing through a lug or post 71, projecting from said plate for the purpose. To the opposite end of said bar f is pivoted or hinged a bar 1', provided at its free end with arms j, extending laterally in opposite directions therefrom, as shown.
The operation of the device is as follows,
to wit: The plates a and a being secured to the door and door-casing, respectively, the bar v is extended until the laterally-extending armsj thereof pass over the ends of the arms 0 0, thus permitting the bars f and t' to lie and work between said arms 0 c, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. This being done, as the door is opened the said bar 2 is drawn toward the front edge of the door, the laterallyextending arms j passing beneath the arms a 0 until they abut against the shoulders 6, thus permitting the door to open from four to six inches and no further, as will be understood upon reference to Fig.8. The keeper d, when turned across the bar f, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, serves to hold the latter in position and to prevent the door from being opened from the outside in case the door should be left unlocked, as will be manifest.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety-fastener for doors, consisting of a plate adapted to be secured to a door and carrying arms 0 and a plate adapted to be secured to the door-casing and carrying bars f and t hinged to one another, the former hinged to said plate and the latter providedwith laterally-extending arms 7', said parts being arranged in relation to each other and operating as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. A safety-fastener for doors, consisting of a plate adapted to be secured to a door and carrying arms 0, a plate adapted to be secured to the door-casing and carrying bars f and c' hinged to one another, the former hinged to said plate and the latter provided with laterally-extending arms j, and also a keeper pivoted to the door-plate, as shown, said parts being arranged in relation to each other and operating as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7 th day of March, 1890.
ANTON BRUNNER.
