J. W! STAYMAN.
, WOOD. SGRAPBR.
No. 439,699. Patented Nov.4, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. STAYMAN, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY J. FUNK, OF SAME PLACE.
WOOD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,699, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed April 5, 1890. Serial No. 346,743. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. STAYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood-Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked Ehereon, which form a part of this specifica- My invention relates to an improvement in scrapers for scraping wood.
My invention relates to that class of scrapers which are used for removing grease, &c., from butchers meat-blocks, for erasing marks on goods boxes, and other like purposes; and it consists in certain novel features in the construction thereof, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved scraper. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of one section of the clamp-head, and shows the hole in the latter for the handle. Fig. at is a plan view of the blade.
My improved scraper differs from ordinary scrapers in having two handles, one projecting from each section of the clamp-head at right angles with the blade.
The object of the two handles is twofold: First, they allow the tool to be drawn in either direction, thus reversing its movement in operating; second, as the tool is operated by grasping one handle in each hand, the scraper can thus be held down upon the surface operated upon with much more ease and with any desired amount of pressure, and at the same time the additional handle is used to guide its movements. .In smoothing and finishing the surfaces of wood-workwhich is to be polished by means of the additional handle the scraper can be held firmly to the surface and an even cut made throughout its movement without any danger of its bounding or marring the wood and requiring a rope 5*0 suit the form of the surface may be used. Its
edges are square to allow the angles to do the cutting. .The blade A is clamped between two sections B B of a-clamp-head, and is held therein by means of bolts a a, which. pass through the whole, holes I) Z) being made in the blade for the purpose and to prevent the latter from shifting from its position. Each of the sections B consists of a plate having a plain inner surface abutting against the This is made of sheet metal, simi-,15 5
blade and with a socket-piece d, projecting centrally at right angles from the plate, into which a wooden handle O is. inserted. The bolts a pass through the plates and blade on either side of the socket-piece d, and are secured by nuts. 0 are both made cylindrical, as best fitted to the hand. They can, however, be made in other form, such as is best suited to the kind of work for which the scraper may be used.
By preference the handles 0 In Fig. 2 the clamp-head is shown as par- 3O tially opened, the bolts being unscrewed to exhibit the blade between the sections and the course of the bolts.
' I claim as my invention-- 1. In a wood-scraper, the combination, with 5 a blade, of two handles extending from opposite sides of said blade at right angles therewith, and means for rigidly securing the inner extremities of said handles to said blade.
2. In a scraper, the combination, with a 9 blade of two handles, one upon either side of said blade, clamp-head sections carried by said handles, and means for rigidly holding said blade in position between said sections.
3. In a scraper, the combination, with a blade, two handles projecting one from either side of said blade and each provided with a clamp-head sect-ion, said blade and sections having aligned perforations, of means passing through said perforations for locking said as and for the purpose set forth. 10 blade between said sections. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 4. In a scraper, the combination, with a presence of two Witnesses. 5 blade, of the two clamp-l1ead sections, each JOHN \V. S'IAYMAN,
of the latter having asoeket-piece projecting Witnesses:
clamp-head sections and said blade together,

said blade, and bolts and nuts securing said
