W. E. JORDAN & F. A. MARIHE-W. DEVIGE FOR ROUNDING UP CIRGULAR SAWS.
No. 436,059. Patented Sept. 9. 1890.
" UNITE STATES \VILLIAM E. JORDAN AND FRANK A. M ARIHEW, OF ORANGE,MASSACHUSETTS.
ATENT FFICE. I
DEVICE FOR ROUNDlNG UP CIRCULAR SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,059, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed June 26, 1890- Serial No. 356,799- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ILLIAM E. JORDAN and FRANK A. MARIHEW, both of Orange, in
the county of Franklin, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Rounding Up Circular Saws, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appe-rtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing our improved device in use; Fig. 2, an edge elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a View illustrating certain details of construction.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe different figures of the drawings.
Our invention relates especially to adevice for dressing or rounding up the edges of circular-saw teeth after having been sharpened; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler; cheaper, and more efiective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement] will be readilyunderstood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the saw, and Bthe mandrel. The rounding-up device consists of a body portion 0, which is forked, forming arms 5, adapted to astride and rest upon the mandrelB when in use. Avertical standard d is mounted in the opposite end of the body 0, and a sleeve or block f is fitted to slide on said standard and is secured in position thereon by a set-screw g. A blookh is fitted to slide on the standard between the sleeve f and body C and is also held in position bya set-screw 2'. An ear j projects from each end of the block h, and a guide-screw passes horizontally through each of said ears, said screws being adapted to engage the face of the saw and serve as guides for the device. Acheck-riut 15 on said screws Z0 holds them in position when adjusted. A similarly-arranged screw m passes through each of the bodyof the saw near the mandrel B, said screws serving as guides. A lug 19 projects laterallyfrom the block h at either side of the setscrew 2', and similar lugs q are formed on the sleeve f in alignment therewith. A verticallyarranged adj usting-screwr passes through corresponding lugs 19 g on said block and sleeve. I
Said screw passes freely through said lugs and has its upper end headed at 16. A nut 17 is turned onto the screw below the block 72, whereby said block maybe adjusted in re- A rod 0" passes through lation to the sleeve. the opposite lugs 19 q and is headed at 18. A coiled spring 25 is disposed around the standard d between the sleeve f and block h. A
arms b and are arranged to engage the face screws 1: m being properly adjusted, the body O is disposed on the mandrel B, with the points of said screws in engagement with the face of the saw. The sleeve f and block h are adjusted on the standard d so that the working-face of the file w is in engagement with the edges of the saw-teeth.
By moving the device with its body in engagement with the mandrel as a center the file 10 reduces the edges of the teeth into an arc of the same circle. By means of the gage-screws k m as a portion of the file wears away the device may be adjusted in relation to the face of the saw to enable a new portion of the file-face to be used. The swinging bracket D may also be adjusted to present different portions of the file-surface for action on the saw. The screw 1' and rod 1*, connecting the block and sleeve, and said block having a bearing on the sawface by means of the gage-screws, lateral movement or rotation of the sleeve is prevented. By turning up the nut 17 the sleeve f may be adjusted in relation to the block it, the spring 23 tending to force them apart.
Having thus explained our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a device of the character described,a body adapted to be held in engagement with the saw-mandrel and provided with a file disposed in position to engage the saw-teeth as said body is rotated on said mandrel, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a forked body adapted to'be held in engagement with the saw-mandrel and rotated around the same as a center, in combination with a file adjustably mounted on said body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a forked body, a standard thereon, a sleeve fitted to slide on said standard, a bracket pivoted to swing vertically on said sleeve, and a file mounted in said bracket, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character described, a forked body, a standard thereon, a sleeve fitted to slide on said standard and bearing a I file, a block fitted to slide on said standard,
gage-screws on said block, and mechanism for adjusting said sleeve in relation to the block, substantially as set forth.
5. In a device of the character described, a forked body provided with gage-screws, a standard thereon, a sleeve fitted to slide on said standard, a file adjustably mounted on said sleeve, a block fitted to slide on said standard, gage-screws in said block, and ad- 3' ustin g mechanism connecting said block and sleeve, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, a forked body, a sleeve adjustable thereon, a
bracket fitted toswingvertically on said sleeve,
a file adjustable on said bracket, a block adjustable on said body, adjusting mechanism connecting said block and sleeve, and gagescrews in said block and body, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the character described, a forked body, a sleeve adjustable thereon, a bracket pivoted to swing vertically on said sleeve, a file adjustable on said bracket, a block adjustable on said body, guide-rods connecting said block and sleeve, a coiled spring disposed on said body between said block and sleeve, and gagescrews in said block, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character described, the forked body 0, provided with the standard d and the gage-screws m, and the block h, fitted to slide on said standard and provided with gage-screws 7c, in combination with the sleeve f, adj ustable on said standard, the screw 0* and rod 1*, connecting said sleeve and block, and the swinging bracket D, provided with the file w, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the character described, the forked body 0, provided with the standard cl, in combination with the sleeve f, adjustable on said standard, and the swinging bracket D, provided with the file w, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the character described, the forked body 0, provided with the standard cl, in combination with the adjustable block h, having the gage-screws 7c, the adjustable sleeve f, screw 1',rodr and the swinging bracket D, provided with the file w, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the character described, the forked body 0, having the standard d, in
combination with the adjustable block 71 the sleeve f, connected by the screw r and rod T the gage-screws k in said block, the bracket D, pivoted to swing vertically on said sleeve,
and the file w, adjustably mounted on said bracket, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the character described, the forked body 0, provided with the gage screws m and standard d, in combination with the sliding block it, provided with the gagescrews k, the sleeve f, the screw 0' and rod 7*, connecting said block and sleeve, the spring t, mounted on the standard (1, the bracket D, pivoted to said sleeve, and the file w, adjustable on said bracket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
