SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,902, dated June 10,1890.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY C. GREEN, of Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sawing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention isan improvement in sawingmachines; and it consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side view of the machine as in use, showing the saw extended in full lines. Fig. 2 is a side view of the machine, one side of the framing being removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the machine, and Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the guide-plates for the lever'and the construction by which such plates are secured.
The main frame consists of two beams A side by side, and held separated to provide between them a space or way for the system of levers and the saw. At one end these two beams are connected by an intermediate block B, while at their opposite ends they are connected by a cross-arch C. The frame is also provided at such end with a spike or spur, which may be driven into the log which it is desired to saw. On the main frame I mount the frame D, which, for convenience of reference, may be termed the lever-frame. This frame is formed of uprights E, connected at their upper ends and secured at their lower ends to the beams A and the brace-bars F, secured at their upper ends to uprights E and at their lower ends to the frame-beams A. A cross-rod G extends between bars F near their connection with the beams A, and braces such bars Fat such point.
The uprights E are formed with horizontal foot-like portions e, which rest upon guideplates H, which are placed and secured upon the beams A and project at their inner edges beyond the inner edges of said beams and serve as guides for the hand-lever, presently described. The saw I operates between the beams A under the cross-arch C. At its rear end the saw-blade I connects with the front ones of a series of pivoted or jointed levers J, arranged to extend and retract such sawblade. The levers J are alike, being ar- I ranged in pairs and pivoted, together in the manner shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
The levers J at the end opposite the connection with the saw-blade are connected with the main frame, preferably by means of the long arms K K, jointed at one end It in the block B of the main frame and connected at their opposite ends with the end levers J.
To vary the throw of the saw-bladethatis, to lengthen or shorten its movementthe number of pairs of levers J may be increased or decreased, as desired.
To operate the levers J, Iprovide the handlever L, formed with arms L L pivoted at l to the uprights E, and connected at the lower end of arm L to the pivotal joint of one pair of levers J, preferably the joint next the connection with arms K, as shown. Thus as the lever is rocked the levers J will be extended and retracted to effect the desired movement of the saw.
It will be noticed that the uprights E have upper holes 6 and lower holes 6 for the pivotbolt of the hand-lever, so that the said lever may be set up in beginning to cut a log, and then set down when the log is partly cut through. The handle is also madein sections jointed at L so that the handle end thereof may be set up or down, as desired. At the point of connection of the saw-blade with the levers J, I provide large washers or disks M, which serve to guide and steady the blade in its movements.
The saw-blade is provided in rear of its connection at M with the levers J with lateral proj ections N, which are engaged by the first pair of levers J for the purpose of holding the saw down onto the log being cut.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with the main frame and the lever-frame D, secured to said main Qame, of the saw-blade, the levers J, arrangedi series and connected at one end to the saw-bl de and at the other end to the main frame, and the operatinglever L, adjustably pivoted between the uprights of the frame D anch having one end connected to the said levers, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a sawing-machine, the combination,
with the main frame and the lever-frame D, consisting of the uprights E and brace-bar F, of the saw-blade, the levers J, arranged in series and connected at one end to the sawblade, the long arms K, pivoted to the levers J and to the main frame, and the lcverL, formed with the arms L L and pivoted between the uprights E and to the levers J, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of the saw-blade I, provided with the pins N, the levers J, pivoted to the saw-blade in front of the said pins and to the main frame, and means for extending and contracting said levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a sawing-machine, of the frame-beamsA, held slightly separated, the guide-plates H, fixed on said beams and projecting at their inner edges in from the inner edges of said beams, the uprights E, having foot-like portions resting on guideplates H, the hand or operating lever pivoted to uprights E and movable between said guide-plates, the saw-blade, and connections between said saw-blade and the lever, substantially as set forth.
5. The improved sawing-machine herein described, consisting of the main frame formed of beams A A, block 13 between one end of said beams and the cross-arch 0, connecting the opposite ends of the beams, the saw-blade, the series of levers J, jointed at one end to the saw-blade, the arms K, connecting the opposite end of said series of levers to the main frame, the lever-frame formed with uprights E and braces F, the guide-plates I-I, fixed on the beams A, and the hand or operating lever pivoted to the upright E and connected with the levers J, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
