FRANK M. MCGREW OF CANAL FULTON, OHIO.
RECLlNlNG-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,948, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed November 7, 1889. Serial No. 329,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LFRANK M. MOGREW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Canal Fulton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new anduseful ImprovementsinReclining-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains. to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reclining-chairs.
The object of the invention is to provide a chair having a stationary seat-section with adjustable back and head sections, as well as a foot-section and arms, the supporting-legs being rigidly attached to the seat-section, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View.
A refers to the seat-section, to which the legs B and B are attached, the rear legs extending at an angle and braced to the front legs, as shown. To the under side of the seatframe A are secured rack-bars a, which extend from the rear portion thereof forwardly and are secured at their front ends to the legs B, the teeth in said bar being pitched, as shown.
0 refers to the arms, which are preferably made of bent wood and are pivoted to the back-section D, the lower ends of the arms extending downwardly beneath the seat and connected to each other by a cross-bar 0, carrying a rod 0, which engages with the ratchetteeth on the bar a, the transverse bar 0 being cut away or recessed above said ratchet-teeth. The curved orbent arm 0 has attached there to a horizontal arm-rest O, the forward end of which is supported by a vertical post, as
' shown.
ends of the bail e are bent at an angle and engage with perforations formed in the lugs F, attached to the foot-section G, the said footsection being hinged to the front end of the seat-frame, as shown. The back-section is provided with similar lugs F, with which the bent ends of the bail e are adapted to engage. It will be observed that by this construction if either the foot-section G or the back-section D is moved the other will move in unison therewith.
H refers to the head-section, which is hinged to the upper end of the back-section D, the said head-section being curved, as shown, and provided with outwardlyprojecting perforated lugs 7L, with which the upper ends of rods I engage, the lower bent ends of said rods being pivotally attached to a casting i, attached to near the upper ends of the rear legs, so that when the section D is thrown back the head-section will incline upwardly therefrom. Thus when the back and foot sections are inclined there will be a corresponding reverse inclination of the head-section, and when the back-section is thrown completely back the said head-section Will be inclined upwardly to form a pillow. The parts are locked in position when adjusted by the arms and rackbars, and to adjust the parts it is only necessary to raise the arms, which can be done while the person occupies the chair.
I claim- 1. In a reclining-chair, the combination of a seat-section having supporting-legs and inclined rack-bars, back and foot sections hinged thereto, the backsection carrying pivoted arms having a connecting-bar which engages with the rack-bars, a sliding block, and pivoted connections engaging therewith and with the back and foot sections, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a reclining-chair, of a seat-section, its supports and inclined bars, a back and foot section hinged thereto and provided with lugs with which pivoted bails engage, said bails being attached to a sliding block operating in guides secured to the seatbottom, and means for retaining the back in position, consisting of side arms pivotally attached to the back and connected by a bar, together with a rack for engaging said bar, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a recliningchair constructed substantially as shown and provided with hinged back and foot sections, guides attached beneath the seat-section, and a sliding block having bails or straps which engage with irons attached to the back and foot sections, of inclined rack-bars with which the transverse bar engages, said bar being pivotally attached near the upper portion of the back-section by side arms, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4-. 'lheconibination,in areclini11g-chair,with a rigid seat-section, supporting-legs therefor, and rack-bars (t (1 of a back-section secured by butt-11in ges at its lower end to the rear of the seat-section, a hinged foot-section, pivoted bails connecting the back-section and foot FRANK M.
