Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK GRAFFE, JR, OF FORT \VAYNE, INDIANA.
COMPOUND FOR CLEANING JEWELRY.
SPEOIFIGATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,668, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed April 4:, 1889. $erial No. 306,000. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK GRAFFE, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Cleansing Preparations for Jewelry, &c.; and I do hereby de- 'clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The cleaning of jewelry with the preparations heretofore used for that purpose and in the manner heretofore practiced has been a matter requiring considerable time and labor. With the view of simplifying the operation and at the same time obtaining better results I have invented and prepared a new mixture, which is easily applied and used, and when used'in the manner hereinafter described will eifectually clean all kinds of jewelry in the shortest time and with the least expenditure of labor, and will restore to the same its original brightness and luster.
The mixture is a solution composed of the following ingredients and in the proportions set forth. viz:
Parts.
Potassium bitartrate 2O Rouge 2 Liquor potassie WVater 25 Perfume 3 Total 100 using the preparation.
cake of soap; rub the article thoroughly with the brush so moistened and prepared, and then rinse well in clear water; then place in fine sawdust, the finer the better, and stir around in the same or shake well, and leave it a few minutes to dry. When dry, the dust will fall off and the article will be as clean and bright as when new.
In cleaning delicate articlessuch as small settings which will not bear rubbing with the brushit will be sufficient to press the brush gently upon the same, repeating the operation until the settings are thoroughly moistened; then rinse and dry as above.
Having now described my invention and the manner of applying and using the same, I claim- The hereinbefore-described cleansing mixture for cleaning jewelry and similar articles, composed of potassium bitartrate, rouge, liquor potassae, and water, in about the proportions set forth. Y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK GRAFFE, JR.
