RUBBER TOOTH-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of4 Letters Patent No. 411,910, dated October 1, 1889.

Be it known that I, HERMAN E. VAN HORNE, of New York, county of New York, in the State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Tooth-Brushes,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an isometric View of my improved rubber tooth-brush with a portion represented as broken away for better illustration; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, except as to the handle.

Like let-ters and figures of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the drawings.

My invention relates to themanufacture of toothbrushes in which the brush portion is constructed of unvulcanized or partially-vulcanized rubber.

My object is to produce an improved brush from soft or gum rubber adapted to t the interstices between the teeth and to scour and thoroughly clean the teeth without being harsh to the gums.

My invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the several clauses of claim hereunto annexed.

My device is constructed as follows: A is the handle, I5 the back, and C the brush proper, formed of soft rubber. The handle Serial 110.267,871. (No model.)

and the back are constructed in any ordinary or preferred manner.

The brush C is of a honey-comb pattern or formation,having perforations l (preferably vertical) extending through it, leaving thin walls 2 between the adjacent perforations.

Having described my inven tion,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is

l. A toothbrush consisting of a handle, a back, and a honeycoinbed brush of soft rubber secured to the back, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a toothbrush consisting cfa handle and a back of hard material and a brush portion constructed of softrubber secured to the back and honeycombed, substantially as described.

3. A tooth-brush consisting of a handle, a back, and a vertically-honeycombed brush of soft rubber attached to the back, substantially as described.

4. In a tooth-brush, a honeycombed brush portion formed of soft rubber adapted to be attached to a brush handle or back, substantially as described.
