. WATER PROOF AIR MATTRESS.
No. 402,992. Patented May 7, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANK SNAVELY, 0F HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-PROOF AIR-MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,992, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed August 25, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANK SNAVELY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 in the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on dotted line of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to improvements in water-proof air-mattresses; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the main wall or casing comprising the top and bottom, sides and ends of the mattress, said parts being of rubber-coated material, preferably canvas.
B B represent disks of rubber or rubber cloth, which are arranged closely together, and are attached by their marginal portions to the inner surfaces of the walls A of the mattress.
D indicates a centerpiece of canvas or rubber cloth, which extends parallel to the top and bottom walls of the mattress, as shown, and to this center piece, D, are secured the inner ends of the rubber tubes 0, which extend therefrom to the disks B of the sides and ends of the mattress, and which are attached by their outer ends to said disks B, as shown in the drawings.
The disks B of the top and bottom walls of the mattress are connected by short vertical tubes, preferably in such manner that the airchambers ofopposite disks are continuous with the tubular chamber. These short vertical tubes are also of rubber, and are not connected to the center piece, D.
The main wall of the mattress may be provided with an ordinary air stop-cock but the air-chambers of the disks and tubular stays Serial No. 283,731. (No model.)
in order to allow the corners to yield and to avoid the employment of transverse or longitudinal stays at the middle portion, where they might if tensely strained injure a person jumping upon the mattress. Instead of securing the ends of the radially arranged tubes B to a center piece, D, they may have their inner ends secured together; but as the number of these tubes is quite large it is found more convenient to attach them to such center piece, as shown.
Loop-handles G are usually attached to the sides of the mattress to facilitate lifting the same and to provide means to enable persons to hold thereto when the mattress is used as a life raft or float.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The water-proof air-mattress having its inner walls provided with water-proof airtight chambered disks B, to which the interior tubular stays, O, are secured, substantially as specified.
2. A water-proof air-mattress consisting of the main wall A, the water proof air-tight disks B, secured to the inside thereof, the center piece, D, and the tubular stays, substantially as specified.
3. A rubber-coated air-mattress composed of the main wall or casing, the rubber waterproof air-tight disks secured to the inner surface thereof, the oenter attachment-piece, the radial stays extending from the disks of the sides and ends to said attachment-piece, and the vertical stays connecting the disks of the top and bottom walls, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
B. FRANK SNAVELY.
