SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,818, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed August 18, 1387. Renewed June l1, 1889. Serial No. 313,850. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ALBERT L. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Armistead, in the county of Pratt and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements iu churns, and the object I have in view is to provide a simple and efficient mechanism for operating the churn-dasher and also to provide a simple means for securing' said mechanism in position; and the invention consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my device, showing the churn-body in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the device. of the top broken away.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the churn, of any ordinary shape, provided with the lid B, and to the upper side of the said lid is secured by screws or other similar means the box C, containing the operating mechanism of the churn. The said box is provided in the upper side with the longitudinal slot D.
E E are vertically-aligned bearings in the upper and lower sides of the box, aligned also with a similar opening` in the center of the lid B.
F F are openings formed in the upper and lower sides of the box on opposite sides of the central bearing E, for a purpose hereinafter specified.
G designates a shaft journaled in the bearings E E and having a central squared recess in its lower end adapted to receive the upper end of the square shank II of the dasher I. The upper end of the shank I-I is secured in the recess in the lower end of the shaft G by means of a pin inserted transversely through the ends of the shaft and shank at their j unction. The said dasher comprises the radial arms i t', secured to the lower end of the shank H, to the outer ends of which are secured the vertical blades .I J, provided with longitudinal openings J therein. The said shaft G is provided with the gear-wheel G', and the lat- Fig. 3 is a plan view with a portion ter is adapted to be engaged by the rack-bai' K, which slides longitudinally in ways within the box C. The said rack-bar is provided at about the center of its length with the vertical arm L, which operates in the' slot in the upper 5 5 side of the box and is provided in the upper end with a perforation.
` M designates an arm extending outwardly from t-he end of the box, and to the extremity thereof is pivoted the lower end of the oper- 6o ating lever or handle N.
O designates a connecting-rod attached at one end to an intermediate point of the said lever, and at the other end to the upper end of the vertical arm L.
It will now be readily seen that when the upper end of the handle is operated the rackbar will also be longitudinally operated in its ways, and as the same is meshed with the gear-wheel on the shaft the latter will be ro- 7o tated and rotate the dasher.
I P designate keys comprising the vertical shanks p, arranged in the vertical openings F F and capable of vertical movement. The upper ends of the said shanks are screwthreaded and the cross heads or handles Q Q are mounted thereon, while the lower ends are provided with cams R R.
It will be observed that the body of the churn is frusto-conical, so that when the de- 8o vice is applied thereto the shanks p p extend down on opposite sides of the body and the handles Q Q are then turned so as to force the shanks downwarduntil the cams engage the body and clamp the cover thereto.
The device is very simple and will be found very eifective, and as it may be attached to any churn-body and secured tightly thereon by means of the keys it will be found very desirable. 9o
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination, with the churn-body having inclined sides, the lid, the dasher, and the box C, secured to the lid and inclosing the 95 dasher-operating mechanism, of the keys I), having the shanks p inserted through vertical openings in the box (l, and provided at their lower ends with the cams R, adapted to engage the sides of the eh urn, and the handles 10o Q, mounted upon the upper endsof the Shanks p, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the churn-body havingr inclined sides, the lid B, the box C, secured thereto, provided with the longitudinal slot D, and having the bearings E, and the openings F on opposite sides of the bearing, the shaft G, j ourn aled in the bearings E and having the dasher-shank secured thereto, the gear-Wheel G on the shaft G, the rack-bar K, operating in Ways in the box C and meshing with the gear-Wheel G', the vertical arm L on the upper side of the rack-bar operating in the slot D, the horizontal arm M, projecting from one end of thc box, the lever N, pivoted thereto,
