G. P. FENNER. GRIPPER MOTION POR PRINTING MAG'HINES- IN I/ E N T 0/? fiearyelfliziz er.
Patented Aug. 6, 1889..

ATTORNEY N, PETERS. Phulo'Lvihngr-lphar. Walhingiun. D4 (1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. FE NNER, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
GRlPPER-MOTION FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,603, dated August 6, 1889.
Application filed March 14:, 1889. Serial No. 303,288. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. FENNER, acitizen-of the-United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gripper-Motions for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in printing-presses, and by means of this invention the grippers, when desired, can be kept out of action while the impression-cylinder keeps rotating, as set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure. l. is aside elevation of a printingpress. Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation like Fig. 1, wit-h parts in a diiferent position than in Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The sheet to be printed is fed off the feedboard A and grasped by the gripper-fingers B on the impression-cylinder C, and after having passed the type-bed D the printed sheet is taken off by a suitable delivery mechanism E. The gripper-fingers B are secured to the shaft F, having a lever or arm G with a rollerstud H. The spring-rod I .in the position of parts shown in Fig. 1 acts on the arm Gso as to press the fingers B into the gripping position. As the cylinder C rotates, the stud I-I, strikes against the cam K, thus swinging the arm G so as to grip the fingers B, and when the roller H has passed the cam K the spring-rod I moves the fingers B back to the gripping position. When it is desired to have the fingers out of action during the entire rotation of the cylinder A, the arm G is swung against the stop L, Fig. 3. In this position the spring-rod I holds the arm G against said stop L, and the fingers B are idle, While the roller H is out of reach of the cam K, so that the oylinderA can continue to rotate Without the roller H striking the cam K. i
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the gripper-shaft F, having fingers or grippers, and an arm G, provided with a stud H, of a cam K for said stud, said shaft being rotatably mounted so that the studH can be swung outof action while the cylinder is rotating, and means, substantially as described, for'holding the stud out of action.
2. The combination, with the gripper-shaft F, having fingers or grippers, and an arm G, provided with a stud H, of a cam K for said stud, a spring-rod I, and a stop L, for holding the stud in position out of reach of the cam, substantially as described. j
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses GEORGE P. FENNER.
