A. F. BAUMER.
CANDLE.
Patented July 16,1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON F. BAUMER, OF SYRACUSE, NElV YORK.
CANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,051, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed February 18, 1889- Serial No. 300,278. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON F. BAUMEE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has special reference to the class of candles which have the wick surrounded by a body of stearine or other hard inflammable material. In the use of such candles much difficulty is experienced in securing the candle in the candlestick, owing to the hard, brittle, and slippery surface of the base of the candle.
The object of this invention is to form a candle entirely of inflammable material, and which shall overcome the aforesaid difficulty; and to that end my invention consists, essentially, of a candle having its body composed of hard inflammable material and a facing of soft analogous inflammable material applied to the base thereof, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a candle embodying my improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a longitudinal section on line 00 :1: and a transverse section on line 3 y in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the body of the candle, which is composed of stearine or other hard in flammable material surrounding the wick a. 4
B denotes the base of the candle, by which it is inserted into the can dlestick. Inasmuch as stearine and analogous hard materials are brittle and very slippery, it is very diflicult to secure in the candlestick candles composed entirely of such material. To obviate this difficulty with candles of that class, I provide the base B with a facing c of either wax or tallow, or a composition of suitable inflammable material softer than the material of the body of the candle. I preferably apply the said facing by reducing the diameter of the base of the candle, then placing around the said base a mold of the requisite diameter and shape, and pour into the mold the molten wax or other analogous soft material, the purpose of said facing being to afford a secure hold in the candlestick, as before stated. Although I prefer to form the base with a core A of the same material as that of which the body is composed and envelop said core in the facing 0, as shown in the drawings, yet I do not limit myself specifically to such a constructi'on, as it is obvious that the base B may be formed entirely of the softer or more adhesive material.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- A candle having its body composed of hard inflammablematerial and its base provided with a facing of softer analogous inflammable material, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto signed my name this 14th day of February, 1889.
ANTON F. BAUMER. [L. s] \Vitnesses:
C. L. BENmxoN, J. J. LAASS.
