APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING, FILTERING, AND DISINFECTING FECAL MATTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,161, dated July 2, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEAN CHABANEL, of the city of Paris, France, have invented Improved Apparatus for Separating, Filtering, and Disinfecting Fecal Matters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to apparatus for separating, filtering, and disinfecting fecal matters, and has for its object to insure efficient working, and enables the apparatus to be emptied without stoppage to its working.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, which represent an example of the improved apparatus, Figure 1 being an elevation, Fig. 2 a top plan, and Fig. 3 a vertical central section thereof. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show details hereinafter referred to.
The same letters of reference serve for like parts in all the figures. a is the soil-pipe communicating at its lower end with the upper part b of the separator, the orifice being closed by a sliding screen 0, working in connection with the piston d, as hereinafter described. Beneath the separator 17 is a receptacle e, supported upon a table f, mounted upon a screw g, operated by a hand-wheel h, for the purpose of maintaining a tight closure between the bottom of separator b and the mouth of receptacle 6, with the aid of a packin g-ring t'. The screw is prevented from loosening under the weight by a ratchet and pawl h.
Fig. 3 shows the apparatus as closed for the purpose of enabling the filled receptacle to be removed and replaced by an empty one, the mouth of the soil-pipes a being closed by the screen 0, so as to prevent the admission of solid matters above the piston d. This latter is mounted upon the lower end of a screw m, provided with a cross-handle j, and is pressed against the internally-flanged mouth of separator b, a perfectly-tight joint beng insured by means of an elastic ring it, Fig. 4, inserted in an annular groove made in the under face of piston d. The receptacle 6 may then be removed without leakage from the separator 12. A cock is provided on the receptacle 6, by which to draw oif a portion of the contents in case it should be too full.
When an empty receptacle has been placed in position and a tight joint made with the cated in Fig. 6.
In order to avoid or remedy any clogging of the soil-pipe a, the overflow-pipe r is connected with the vessel 1) at a lower level through a pipe and cock 1!, by which the liquid can be drawn off below the orifice of the soil-pipe, and thus enable the latter to be freed from the obstruction, after which cook a would be closed and the liquid again allowed to flow out from the higher level, as before,

By means of the cage or perforated vessel placed in the upper part of the apparatus,
combined with the rising and falling screen screen 0, so that the lower end of the pipe a shall be open, the matter is introduced through the pipe (1 and enters the perforated cage q, and drops thence into the receptacle (2 in a substantially loose condition; and when that receptacle e is full, the matter continuing to How through the pipe Ct will enter and remain in the cage (1 until the cage is full to the lower face of the piston (7. This entire operation depends of course upon the production of a properly tight joint between the vessels 1) and c.
I claim 1. The combination of the vessel I), with the inner perforated cage q, with the inlet-pipe a, leading into said cage, and with the piston 11 within said cage, said piston being provided with the lower packing-ring 7,; and the circumferential scraper p, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the vessel 1) and inn er perforated cage q, and inlet-pipe a, leading to said cage,with the piston (7, adapted to move within said cage, and with the slide 0, which is adapted to be moved up and down by said piston to open and close the inlet-pipe, as specified.
The combination of the vessel Z), inner perforated cage q, inlet-pipe a, slide 0, and piston (7, with the lower vessel c, table f, and screw g, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of the vessel Z1, inner perforated cage q, inlet-pipe ct,leading to said cage, slide 0, piston (Z, and overflow-pipe 9", having branch 11, with the lower receivingvessel 0, and vertically-movable table f, for supporting said vessel 6, as specified.
The foregoing specification of my improved apparatus for separating, filtering, and disinfecting fecal matters signed by me this 3d day of December, 1888.
