Abstract

In a printer, character-bearing type elements moving along a print line selectively impact a ribbon against a document backed by a platen to print on the document. The platen is automatically retracted at the end of each print cycle to provide adequate clearance for advancing the document for the next line of printing, whereupon it is advanced so as to provide an optimum space relation with the type elements for printing the next line.

Claims (10)

1. The combination in a printer having a type carrier and an impact member on opposite sides of a document for performing a printing operation thereon of: operating means for adjusting the spacing between the type carrier and the impact member, carriage means for advancing the document between printing operations including a motor having carriage switch means operable to ON and OFF positions to control the advance of the document, and means for controlling the operating means to increase the spacing between the type carrier and the impact member each time the carriage means advances the document.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1 characterized by the type carrier comprising a plurality of movable character bearing elements moving along a track and provided with actuating means to actuate the elements transversely of the track to impact the document against a platen impact member.
3. The invention as defined in claim 2 characterized by the platen being movably supported for movement toward and away from the type carrier.
4. The invention as defined in claim 3 characterized by the platen member being spring biased away from the type carrier and having electromagnetic operating means to advance it toward the carrier.
5. The invention as defined in claim 4 characterized by the platen member being provided with electromagnetic latch means to latch the platen in an advanced position.
6. The invention as defined in claim 5 characterized by circuiT means connected to respond to operation of the carriage switch means to the OFF position and connected to effect operation of the platen electromagnetic operating means.
7. The invention as defined in claim 6 characterized by circuit means connected to respond to operation of the carriage switch means and connected to effect operation of the electromagnetic operating means and the electromagnetic latch means in timed relation.
8. The invention as defined in claim 7 characterized by the electromagnetic latch means having a retract magnet winding for releasing the electromagnetic latch means.
9. The invention as defined in claim 8 characterized by circuit means connecting the retract magnet winding to be energized by the carriage switch means when operated to the ON position.
10. The invention as defined in claim 9 characterized by the electromagnetic operating means and the latch means being provided with bistable switch means and having set and reset operating conditions and carriage switch means being connected to reset said switch means for the electromagnetic operating means and the electromagnetic latch means when it effects energization of the retract magnet winding.
