PUMP-IFAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,557, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed April 23, 1884.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER J OIIAN (ll/Esau, of Chippewa Falls, Chippewa county, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Pump Faucets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
: in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the sliding valve-plates. Fig. 3 is a sectional [5 end elevation of the pump faucet, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide pump-faucets for withdrawing beer and other fermented liquids from their casks without admitting air.
The invention consists in a pump faucet constructed with a cylinder, the plunger of which is provided with a longitudinal perforation to receive a rod, having a split spring at 2 its inner end and connected at-its outer end by rods with the inlet and discharge valves, so that the said valves will be opened and closed by the movements of the said plunger. The outer end of the rod having the split spring passes through a bar attached to the cylinder to limit the outward movement of the said rod. With the cylinder, the screwplug, and the plunger is connected a screwsleeve, so that the packing-ring can be compressed by turning the said plunger. The
outer side of the stationary valve-plate is provided with a flange, to which is hinged a plate held up by a spring to confine a portion of the liquid at the outer side of the said valve-plate,
and thus prevent an inward leakage of air, as
will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the cylinder of the instrument. To the forward end of the cylinder A is screwed a tapered cap, B, to serve as a valve-chamber,
5 and which has a number of small perforations,
0, formed through its inner end.
Within the cylinder A is placed a cylindrical plunger, D, having a knob, E, or other suitable handle upon its outer end.
The outer end of the cylinder A is enlarged,

and has a screw-thread in the outer part of the inner surface to receive the exterior screwthread of the annular plug F. The inner part of the plug F is recessed to receive a ringpacking, G, and has ascrew-thread upon the 5 inner surface of its inner part to receive the screw-thread formed upon the outer surface of the sleeve II, which is connected with the plunger D by a tongue and groove or other suitable means, so that the said sleeve can be screwed into the annular plug F to compress the packing G by turning the said plunger D.
Upon one side of the enlarged outer end of the cylinder A is formed, or to it is attached, the discharge-nozzle I, and in the inner surface of the said cylinder A are formed four (more or less) grooves, J, to serve as passages for the liquid, and which extend from the enlarged outer end of the said cylinder A to its inner end.
Within the tapered cap 13 is placed a tapered semi-tubular valve-shell, K, the inner end of which is closed, and which has an annular flange, L, around its outer end to fit be tween the shoulder of the cap B and the end of the cylinder A, so that the said shell K will be secured in place by screwing on the said cap 13. The flat side of the valve-shell K is perforated, and serves as ascat for the sliding valve-plate M, which is correspondingly perforated, so that the passage of the liquid can be permitted or prevented by moving the said plate M.
To the valve-plate M is attached the end of a rod or stem, N, which passes through the open inner end of the shell K, and is attached to the inwardly-bent end of the rod 0. The rod 0 passes along one of the grooves J, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and its other end is bent outward, passes through the discharge- 9 passage leading to the nozzle I, and is attached to the perforated sliding valve-plate P, placed upon 'a perforated plate, Q, secured in the space or chamber formed in the base of the nozzle I.
The perforations of the valves K M and Q P are so arranged that one of the said valves will be open as the other is closed.
The inwardly-bent end of the red O is attached to the end of a rod, R, which passes :00
into a-central perforation, S, in the plunger D, and has a split or forked spring, T, formed upon or attached to its end. The spring T is made of such a strength as to cause so much friction between it and the'inner surface of the said plunger that the said plunger in its movements will carry the rods R O N with it, and thus open and close the valves K M and QP. The outward movement of the rods R O N is limited by a stop-bar, U, attached to the cylinderA through a hole in which the rod R passes, and against which the inwardly-bent end of the rod 0 strikes. The inward movement of the rods R O N is limited by the end of the rodR coming in contact with the wide part of the flange L. The stop-bar U is so placed that the rods R O N will have no further movement than sufficient to open and close the valves K M and Q P.
In using the pump-faucet it is placed in the closed cask or other vessel containingthe liquid, near the bottom of the said vessel, and when the plunger is drawn outward it carries the rods R O N with it until they are stopped by the end of the rod 0 striking against the .opens the valve Q P, so that the liquid in the cylinder A willbe forced out through the valve Q P and nozzle I, and the liquid will be drawn from the vessel without admitting air to the said vessel.
Around the outer edge of the stationary valve-plate Q is formed a flange, V, to which is hinged one end of the plate W, which, when the inward movement of the plunger D stops,
is closed by a spring, X, connected with its h1nge or some other convenient part, to confine a portion of the escaping liquid at the outer side of the valve Q P, so that when the plunger D is being drawn outward, if there should be any inward leakage through the valve Q P, that leakage will be of the liquid confined beneath the said valve, and not of air.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with a cylinder and its plunger, of an inlet and outlet valve connected to the plunger, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said valves will be alternately opened and closed by the longitudinal movement of the plunger, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with a cylinder and its plunger, of an inlet-valve, an outlet-valve, and connecting-rods for connecting the valves together and to the plunger, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby provision is made for drawing liquid from a closed vessel without the admission of air to the same, as set forth.
3. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with the cylinder A and the plunger D, having longitudinal perforations, of the valves K M and Q P, the rods R O N, and the .rod and spring :R T, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said valves will be opened and closed by the movements of the said plunger, as set forth. bar U; This movement of the rods R O N 1 4. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with the cylinder A, provided with inlet and outlet valves connected together, of the cylindrical plunger D, and the rod R, secured in the cylindrical plunger by its spring T, and connected to'said inlet and outlet valves, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with the cylinder A, the plunger D, and the annular screw-plug G, of the screw-sleeve H, connected with the said plunger, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the packing can be compressed by turning the said plunger, as set forth.
6. In a pump-faucet, the combination, with the discharge-valve Q P, having flange V, of
the hinged plate W and its spring X, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the inward leakage of air through the said 5 valve will be prevented, as set forth.
