2 Claims. '(Cl. 2486430) "This invention relates to furniture 'structure and is more particularlydirectedto sitting'furniture known as gliders. t
A principal object of thepresent invention is to provide a glider which is simple in construction, inexpensive in cost and which utilizes extruded members for its gliding apparatus.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a glider which automatically returns to its normal rest position whenever the glider is not in use or its occupant does not urge it to oscillate back and forth.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a glider with a gliding apparatus which oscillates back and forth without any sideways or twisting action of With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient'features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a glider constructed in accordance with our invention.
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary and enlarged side elevational view showing the gliding apparatus.
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 33 of FIGURE 2.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 refersto a glider constructed in accordance with our invention and consisting of a seat portion 11, a back rest portion 12 and arm rests 13.
The seat portion 11 and back rest portion 12 are secured to and supported by a horizontally disposed frame 1.4 while the arm rests are fastened to the upper portion of tubular side frames 15 which are formed into a rectangular shape. The seat support frame 14 is likewise formed into a rectangular shape having side members 16 which extend between the side frames 15 and are fastened thereto to form a rigid support. a V
The lower horizontal leg portion 17 of each of the side frames 15 are supported by gliding apparatus 20 which constitutes applicants invention. The gliding apparatus 29 consists of a plurality of extruded members 21 and 22. In general the upper extruded members or glide bars 21 support the side frames 15 and rollers while the lower extruded members 22 support tracks 26 for the rollers 25. The upper extruded members 21 are concave along its full length as at 23 to form a saddle-like support for the horizontal leg portions 17 of the side frames 15. Screws 24 extending through bores in the leg portions 17'secure the latter to the glidebars 21. The glide bars 21 are provided at their lower portion with vertical disposed, spaced walls 27 between which extend a pair of bolts or pins 28, only one being shown in FIG. 3, with a nut 29 threaded thereon as shown by FIGURES 2. and 3. Rotatably mounted on the mid-por- Means are provided to cause the glide bars 21 to oscillate on the support members 22 in a symmetrical manner and to resume its normal mid-position on the support members 22 when not swinging or sliding thereon comprising a yoke 38 pivotally secured as at 39 to the middle of each foot members 34. The other or upper end of each of the yokes 38 is secured to one end of acoil spring 40 whose other end extends to a bracket 41. The bracket 41 is secured as at 42 to the mid-portion of each of the side members 16 of the seat supporting frame 14.
It can be readily noted from thedescription given above taken in conjunction with the drawing, that the glider seat 11 will normally rest on the gliding apparatus at its mid-position. When a person sits on the glider 10 and begins to took back and forth thereon, the rollers 25 will roll back and forth on the tracks 26. The springs 40 will permit the glider 10 to slide a short but approximately equal distance beyond each end of the support members 22 against the expanding force of the springs 40 which then contract to return the glider 10 to its midposition thereby effecting an oscillating action until the initial force is spent, at which time the glider 10 resumes its normal centered'rest position as shown by FIGURES 1 and 2.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a glider having asubstantially horizontally disposed main frame and a substantially vertically disposed side frame mounted on each end of said first named frame, the combination comprising a pair of elongated roller supporting members having a concave top wall portion receiving each ofsaid side frames and a pair of spaced side wall portions, means securing said side frames to said roller supporting members, a plurality of pins extending between said side wall portions, a roller rotatably mounted on each of said pins, spacer means mounted on said pins on each side of said rollers, elongated floor engaging members positioned in alignment'with said roller supporting members, a track mounted on each of said floor engaging members, an upwardly extending flange member mounted on each side of said tracks, downwardly extending flange members mounted on said side wall portions of said roller supporting members in spaced and overlapping relation with said first named flange members and spring means extending between said side frame and said floor engaging members yieldingly urging said rollers in contact relation with said tracks at a predetermined position thereof.
2. A glider comprising a substantially horizontally disposed main frame, a'substantiallyvertically disposed side frame mounted on each end of said main frame, said side frames each having an elongated horizontally disposed tubular member, a pair of elongated roller supporting members having a concave top wall receiving said Patented Feb. 23, 1965- r, I) tubular member and a pair of spaced side wall portions, means securing said tubular members to said roller supporting members, a plurality of pins extending between said side wall portions, a roller rotatably mounted on each of said pins, spacermeansirnounted on said pins on each side of said rollers, elongated'floor engaging members positioned in alignment with said roller supporting members, a track mounted on each of said floor engaging members, an upwardly extending flange member mounted on each side of said tracks, downwardly extending flange members mounted on said side wall portions of said roller supporting members in spaced and overlapping relation with said first named flange members, a bracket secured to the mid-portion of each end of said main frame, a yoke extending over each of said elongated roller supporting members, means pivotally securing the lower ends References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 9/62 Pearlstine 248-430 2,457,424 12/48 Wolf et al. 308190 X 2,714,356 8/55 Hunziker 104-412 X 3,098,678 7/63 Pearlstine 248-430 X CLAUDE A.
