Referring now to the drawings in detail and to FIGS. i, 2. and 4 in particular, the piece of lumber, such as the edge of a window sash or door in which holes are to be drilled, is shown at A. The drilling jig according to the present invention, includes a frame comprised in part by a rectangular vertically positioned plate ill. This plate 10 has two rectangular apertures 10a and 10c therein, which are positioned with their longer sides parallel to and symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the plate and are separated by a web 10b along the transverse center line. At its top the plate 10 has an integral upper right angle flange 11, which is preferably curved in the arc of a circle in top plan view. The drilling jig is in part secured to the piece of lumber A by a power screw 14, which is mounted in a suitable screw threaded hole in the upper horizontal ilange 11. At its upper end the screw 14 has a rod 15 positioned in a diametrically located hole therein and this rod has enlarged ends 15a- 15a to hold same in place. It will be obvious that by turning the rod 15 the screw 14 may be rotated in the proper direction. The lower end ofthe screw 14 is of inverted frusto-conical shape at 14a and this lower end is slidably received in a dove-tailed slot 16a in a thrust block 16. The thrust block lo is adapted to rest on one surface oi the piece of lumber A.
At its bottom the plate 1% is formed with a second horizontal ange 12, which is positioned on the same side of the plate and is parallel relationship to the upper horizontal iiange 11. This lower ange 12 also has two rectangular apertures 12a and 12C therein, the side walls of which each have a 1 longitudinal taper. The ange is positioned with the rectangular apertures 12a and 12e having their tapered sides parallel to and symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the door A, when the jig is being used for drilling dowel holes This stop plate has an l close to the end of the latter. elongated slot 17a along its longitudinal center line and a right angle ange 17 b at its outer end to facilitate gripping. A screw 18 is positioned in the elongated slot 17a in the stop plate and is received in a suitable screw threaded hole in the vertically positioned plate 1l). The inner end of the stop plate abuts the end of the door or window sash A to position the drilling jig at some location determined by alignment ot a selected mark on the scale 12d with the end ofthe door or window sash A.
For drilling holes in the edge of a door or window sash A a greater distance from the end of the latter, that is when hinges or latches are to be mounted in the edge of the door or window sash, an elongated scale bar 19, as shown in FIG. 6, is provided. This scale bar has an elongated slot 19a, positioned symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal center line, and a scale 19h scribed on one tace between the slot 19a` and one side. As shown in FIG. 7, this scale is adapted to be received in a slot 10d in the plate 1li, which slot is positioned symmetrically thescrew 18, and the inner end is formed with right angle fingers 19d, which engage one edge of the vertically positioned plate 1li. A bolt 20 is movable along the elongated slot 19a and this bolt has a square bottom 20a and a cylindrical knurled nut Zlib. By setting the bolt 20 with its transverse diameter in alignment with a selected mark on the scale 1917, and one side of the bottom 20a of the bolt abutting the end of the door or window sash A, the vertically positioned plate 1l) may be set at a desired location along the edge of the door or window sash within the limits of the slot 19a in the scale.
The vertically positioned plate 10 is also formed at its bottom with a third flange 13, which is horizontally aligned with the second ilange 12, but on the opposite side of the plate from the latter. This latter ilange has two rectangular apertures 13a and 13C therein, the side walls of which each has a 1 longitudinal taper. The ange is positioned with the rectangular apertures 13a 4 and 13C having their tapered sides parallel to and sym- 25-25 by thrust exerted diametrically of the eyes and metrically dlsposed with respect to the longitudinal center across the chords of the open sections of the latter ine and are separated by a web 13b, which is positioned In use, let it be assumed that parallel holes are to be along the transverse center line of the Harige. A suitablev drilled in the edge of a door or window sash A adjacent scale 13d is scribed on the top surface of the flange be- 5 the end of the latter for driving in dowels to hold lontween the apertures 13a and 13e and the outer side of gitudinally and transversely positioned members of the the flange. door or window frames together. The screw 18 is Vertically positioned slides 21-21 are movable along loosened so as to leave the stop plate 17 freely slidable. the apertures 13a and 13e in the llange 13. As shown in The plate 10 is positioned against the edge of the door FIG. 8, these slides are comprised by a base and parallel 10 or window sash A. The transverse center line between legs 21a`2la, with one of the legs having a scale 2lb the two holes is determined by setting a preselected mark scribed tnereon The corners of the base are cut away on the scale 12d on the ange 12 in alignment with the and the base is cut away on its transverse center line t0 end of the door or window sash A. e stop plate 17 fOrIIl parallel lugs 21e- 210, which latter are undercut is then shoved inwardly against the edge of the door or on their side walls at 21d-21d- Also, the inner side walls l5 window sash and the screw 18 tightened.
