Description
July 3, 1962 T. D. HANSEN FASTENING DEVICE Filed Aug. 4, 1960 The/ma D. Hansen INVENTOR.

Patented July 3, 1962 3,041,694 FASTENING DEVICE Thelma D. Hansen, P.O. Box 761, Vale, Oreg. Filed Aug. 4, 1960, Ser. No. 46,615 3 Claims. (Cl. 24-103) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in upholstering, etc. fasteners of the type comprising a spiral pin mounted on a disk or button and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character cornprising novel guard means for said pin.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fastening device of the aforementionedcharacter which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, compact, strong, of light weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE l is a perspective view of an improved fastening device constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a view in bottom plan thereof;
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale through the device, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of FIGURE l; and
FIGURE 4 is a vertical sectional view, showing the device in use. Y
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a head, disc or button 5 of suitable dimensions and material. Of course, the disc 5 may be suitably colored or ornamented. In the embodiment shown, the disc 5 includes a slightly convex top 6 and a flat bottom 7.
Mounted centrally beneath the disc 5 and depending therefrom is a resilient spiral pin 8 of the extension type. As shown to advantage in FIGURE 3 of the drawing, the upper end of the spiral extension pin 8 is bent upwardly as indicated at 9 and anchored in the disc 5. At its lower end the spiral pin 8 terminates in a penetrating point 10.
Also mounted centrally beneath the disc 5, in spaced, concentric relation to the spiral pin 8, is a relatively long, resilient, compression spiral guard 11. The upper end portion of the `spiral guard 11 is bent upwardly as indicated at 12 and anchored in the disc 5. -In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the spiral guard 11 terminates at its lower end in a loop or eye 13 to prevent snagging the material, as indicated at 14, when the device is applied.
It is thought that the -use of the fastener will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briey, Toapply the device, the spiral guard 11 is engaged with the material 14 and compressed to bring the penetrating point 10 of the pin 8 into contact with said material. The device is then turned or rotated in an obvious manner for causing the point of the pin 8 to penetrate the material and screw said pin downwardly into said material. When the spiral pin 8 is thus screwed into the material the guard 11 is compressed between said material and the disc 5 as shown in FIGURE 4 of the drawing. Thus, the member 11 performs the dual functions of tensioning the spiral pin 8 andl guarding said pin at all times.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desiredv` to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and `described, and accordingly all suitable modications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
l. A fastening device -comprising a button, a resilient, spiral pin secured centrally beneath said button vand depending therefrom and adapted to be screwed into an object, and a relatively long, compressible, resilient spiral guard mounted beneath said button in spaced, concentric relation to said pin and extending beyond the lower end thereof for engagement with the object, said guard adapted to be axially compressed and tensioned between the button and the object as the pin is screwed thereinto.
2. A fastening device comprising a button, a resilient, spiral pin secured centrally beneath said button and depending therefrom and adapted to be screwed into an object, and a relatively long, compressible, resilient spiral guard mounted beneath said button'in spaced, concentric relation to said pin and extending beyond the lower end thereof for engagement with the object, said guard adapted to be axially compressed and tensioned between the button and the object as the pin is screwed thereinto, said pin terminating in a penetrating point at its lower end, said guard terminating in a loop at its lower end.
3. A fastening device comprising a disc including a liatl bottom, a resilient cylindrical spiral pin mounted centrally beneath said bottom and depending therefrom and adapted to be screwed into an object, said pin including an upwardly bent upper end portion embedded in the disc and further including a penetrating point on its lower end, and a relatively long, compressible, resilient spiral guard mounted beneath the button in spaced, concentric relation to the pin and extending beyond the lower end thereof and engageable withthe object, said guard adapted to be axially compressed and tensioned between the disc and the object as the pin is screwed thereinto, said guard including an upwardly bent upper end portion embedded in the disc and further including a loop on its lower end.
