1 Claim. (Cl. 230259) This invention relates to ventilating fans, and more particularly to a table fan adapted to provide horizontal outward flow of air therefrom in all directions in a horizontal plane.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved ventilating fan which is simple in construction, which is compact in size, and which is adapted to provide an eflicient and steady circulating action of air in the area in which it is located with a minimum amount of noise or vibration.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved ventilating fan assembly adapted to be mounted on a table or any other horizontal surface and to provide a horizontally directed outward flow of air therefrom in all directions in a horizontal plane, the assembly involving inexpensive components, being neat in appearance and being durable in construction.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an improved ventilating fan assembly constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged bottom view of the fan assembly in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the elements of the fan assembly of Figures 1 and 2, shown in separated positions.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical cross sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal cross sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, the improved ventilating fan assembly is designated generally at 11 and comprises a concave apertured base 12 which is provided with the downwardly and outwardly inclined supporting legs 13, said legs being disposed at equal angles around the vertical axis of the base and being arranged to support the base on any suitable horizontal surface 14, for example, the top surface of a table. The base 12 comprises the upwardly concave bottom portion 15 which is formed with a plurality of rows of arcuate air intake slots 16 arranged concentrically around the vertical axis of the base. Secured to the top rim 17 of the bottom member 15 is the annular arcuately curved flange portion 18 having the same curvature as the bottom member 15 and merging smoothly therewith to define the upwardly facing concave base member 12 above mentioned.
The annular member 18 is formed at its top rim with the horizontally extending peripheral flange 19.
Designated at 20 is a downwardly concave top cover member which comprises the annular top cap 21 which is secured at its rim to the upper rim of an annular, arcuately curved wall member 22, said wall member being generally similar in shape to the annular wall member 18 of the base 12 and opposing same. The annular wall member 22 is formed at its bottom rim ates. Paramrespective peripheral flanges 23 and 19.
ICQ
2 with the horizontal peripheral flange 23 which opposes the flange 19 of base12. 1
Designated at 24 is a generally circular baffle plate which is disposed in a horizontal position between the top member 20 and the base 12, the plate 24 being somewhat larger in diameter than the'respective marginal flanges 19 and 23, as shown in Figure4 and projecting horizontally outwardly from between said flanges. The flange 23 is secured to the plate 24 and to the flange 19 in spaced parallel relationship thereto by a plurality of vertical fastening bolts 25 which extend through respective pairs of spacer sleeves 26 and 27 disposed around the bolt on opposite sides of the horizontal plate 24, as
shown in Figure 4, the bolts 25 being provided on their are located at equal angles around the assembly and the spacers 26 and 27 maintain the flanges 23 and 19 spaced and parallel to the ber 24.
The top cap 21 is provided with a plurality of con centric grill rings 30 secured to radial rod elements 31, whereby to define an air inlet for the top cover member 20. The slots 16 in the bottom member 15 define'an air inlet for base 12. a
As will be presently described, the respective spaces between flanges 23 and 19 and plate member 24 define horizontally directed air outlet passages through which air is circulated by the fan assembly.
The bottom member 15 is formed at its center with a depending cup 32 in which is mounted an electric motor 33, said motor having the vertical shaft 34 which extends upwardly through a bearing sleeve 35 formed intervening horizontal plate memcentrally in the plate member 24, said bearing sleeve being provided with a bearing bushing 36 which rotatably supports the vertical shaft 34. Secured on shaft 34 below the horizontal plate member 24 is a first multiple-bladed fan assembly 37, and secured to the top end portion of shaft 34 namely, to the portion thereof above the horizontal plate member 24, is a second multiplebladed fan assembly 38.
As shown in Figure 4, the fan blades of the assemblies 37 and 38 are oppositely pitched, said fan blades being formed tocirculate air entering respectively through the top cap 21 and the bottom member 15 andto drive said air outwardly in a substantially radial direction along the horizontal baffle plate 24 and through the horizontal outlet passages defined between said baffle plate and the In operation, air enters the top of the assembly through the apertures defined in cap member 21 and enters the bottom of the assembly through the slot 16, the air being driven centrifugally in the respective cover member 21 and base member 18, being forced outwardly from the fan assembly in a horizontal direction and substantially in all directions in a horizontal plane through the spaces between the flanges 19 and 23 and the baflle plate 24.
While a specific embodiment of an improved ventilating fan assembly adapted for use on a horizontal supporting surface has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it'will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those wardly facing cup formed in the center of said base, an
electric motor vertically mounted in said cup and having an upwardly projecting vertical shaft, a horizontal outwardly'proiectin'gperipheral'flange on said base, an
arcuately concave" circular top cover facing downwardly over said base, said top cover having a horizontal pcripheral flange disposed, above and parallel tq saidfirstnamed flange, a circular horizontal baffife' plate substanarranged td forceairenteringthrough said intake open-l tially larger in diameter than saidflanges,*meatis securing I and-in spaced parallel relation'thereto; whereby to dfine continuous ,annular'hor'izon tal Vaii' meetin s pas sages immediately above and below the peripheral margin of said baflie plate, a bearing bushing'moun ted centrally in said baifle plate, said shaft extendingfrotatably through i and being supportedby said bushing, said basebeing formed adjacent said cup with a plurality of' ar cuate' slots concentriewith said cup andid efining bottom air intake openings, a central upstanding cap' membe'rfon said top cover, said cap member being formed with air intake openings, and respective oppositely pitched mulsaid baffle plate between fsaidflanges"coaxially'therewith v tiple-bladed fan assemblies mu eum]; said shaft above and below said baffleplate and being constructed and ings outwardly through said continuous annular horizontal discharge passages;
