No. 629 1 Claim. (Cl. 297-220) This invention relates broadly to appliances for dentists chairs, and more particularly to sanitary covers for the head rests on dentists chairs.

Dentists chairs, upon which patients are seated while work is being done on their teeth are each provided with a head rest usually comprising a pair of spaced-apart elements made from a hard substance such as hard rubber, between which the head of the patient is supported. Since the same head rest is used by all of the dentists patients, it is hygienic practice for the dentists to cover the elements which constitute the head rest each with a sanitary cover.

Sanitary covers are now on the market. Each of the covers now used comprises a segment of washable material of a size to fit the head rest member. The edge of the material has an elastic band secured thereto by sewing, with which the cover is retained on the head rest member in adjusted position.

These sanitary covers are not satisfactory for several reasons. The elastic band which is stitched to the material can and often does become loose, making the cover unfit for effective use, and the cover does not cushion the hard surface of which the elements of the head rest are made, therefore the covers now known do not help to make the patient more comfortable while he is undergoing treatment at the hands of the dentist.

The dental profession has long sought a cover which combines the hygienic requirement of a sanitary cover with a cushion for the comfort of the patient.

With this in mind, it is the principal object of the present invention to provide a cover for the head rest of a dentists chair which is a combination sanitary cover and cushion.

It is a further aim of the present invention to provide a combination sanitary cover and cushion for the purpose referred to, which can be placed into its operative position quickly and effectively.

And a yet further purpose of the present invention resides in the provision of a combination sanitary cover and cushion for the purpose referred to, which is made from several segments of a plastic material joined without stitching.

And a still further aim of the present invention resides in the provision of a combination sanitary cover and cushion for the purpose referred to, the head rest embracing member of which is made of resilient material.

These and other meritorious aims and advantages, which will become more fully apparent as the description hereof proceeds, are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of few and simple parts, hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a material component of the present disclosure, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the upper part of a dentists chair showing the head rest which comprises two spaced-apart elements, one of which is provided with the combination sanitary cover and cushion which constitutes the subject-matter of the present invention.

FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of the upper part of the chair illustrated in FIGURE 1, the section being taken on line 2.2 of FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 3 is a front elevational view of a combination sanitary cover and cushion of the present invention.

FIGURE 4 is a side elevational viewer the device illustrated in FIGURE 3, partly in section.

FIGURE 5 is a rear view of the device illustrated in FIGURE 3.

Referring in greater detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 refers broadly to the upper portion of a chair such as is customarily used by a dentist and upon which a patient is seated while undergoing dental treatment. The upper end of the chair terminates in a head rest for the patient, the head rest comprising a pair of spaced-' apart elements 13 and '14 respectively, which may be secured to a cross-bar 12 at the end of an upright 11. The mounting of the head rest on the chair does not form a part of the present invention and may be different from that illustrated and described.

Elements 13 and 14, here illustrated as being discshaped, are made from a hard substance such as hard rubber.

The combination sanitary cover and cushion for the said elements '13 and 14, which constitutes the present invention, comprises an outer element 15, here illustrated as being disc-shaped, an inner disc-shaped portion 18, and a neck portion 19 of smaller diameter than the diameters of elements 15 and 18.

In order to constitute a cushion for the head rest, element *15 is shown as being provided with a sponge rubber pad 16 and element 18 is provided witha sponge rubber pad 17 as illustrated in the drawing. The three segments are joined together without stitching, as by molding at a predetermined temperature and by the use of suitable and desirable molds, the juncture being illustrated at 20.

When the device is completely assembled, as illustrated in the drawing, it resembles in appearance the head gear commonly called a beret.

The use of the device is obvious, and it will be appar ent that neck piece 19 can be stretched somewhat in order to permit it to pass the edge of the head rest and, because of its resiliency it will contract, thereby retaining the device in adjusted position.

Since the pads used in the construction of the device are made of foam rubber, the cover will not only be sanitary but it will also constitute a cushion, whereby the head rest will be made considerably more comfortable for the patient using it. For still greater comfort, the outer face of disc 15 may be crinkled.

Thus there has been shown and described a combination sanitary cover and cushion for the head rest on a dentists chair in the preferred form of its embodiment. Obviously changes in the device may be made. For instance, the contour of the device may be altered when necessary to conform to the contour of other head rests, and it may be used in connection with head rests on chair-s other than dentists chairs.

It is to be understood therefore that the present dis.- closure is to be regarded as illustrative and descriptive only of the best known form of the present invention but it is not to be regarded as lirnitative or restrictive to the exact details shown, applicant reserving the right to make such changes in the device as may come within the scope of the appended claim, without thereby departing either from the spirit or the scope of the present invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

As an article of manufacture, a combination sanitary cover and cushion for each of the elements which contion sanitary cover and cushion comprising a cover memher, a cushion pad therein, and a resilient neck portion throughout the edge of said cover portion whereby said cover portion is rcmovably secured to one of the elements of the head rest, said cover portion and said neck portion joined without stitching.
