PEN REST.-
No. 298,603 Patented May 13, 1884..
INVENTOR- WITNESSES N. PETERS Phohr-Lithognpher, Washington, nv c.
CAMERON MOKINNON, OF 'MIDVVAY, ALABAMA.
PEN REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,603, dated May 13 1884.
Application filed March 20, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAMERON MoKINNoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Midway, in the county of Bullock and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Rests; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved penrest. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slightly-modified construction of the. same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for supporting a pen-holder or pencil in the hand of the writer, or a so-called pen-rest, whereby the writer is compelled to hold the writing utensil in its proper position upon the paper; audit consists in the detailed construction of a device of that class, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes a ring of any suitable material, and of such a size that it will fit readily upon the forefinger or indeX-finger of the writer. Upon the under side of this ring is fastened a short piece of wire, or a short strip of any suitable sheet metal or other suitable material, I one end of which projects in a straight line, as shown at C, while the other end is bent to form a hook, D. The piece of wire B may either be fixed rigidly upon the ring by soldering or cementing, or it may be fastened adjustably thereon by means of a socket, E, and setscrew F, inserted through the socket, so that by loosening the set-screw the position of the wire may be changed at will and again fast- (No model.)
ened in its adjusted position by tightening down the screw.
By reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings the manner of using this device will be understood at a glance. The ring is slipped upon the index-finger, with the hooked end of the wire passing under and around the second finger. The pen or pencil is supported upon the pro j ecting end 0, which may be bent, if desired, as indicated in dotted lines, for the purpose of adjusting the position of the pen or pencil properly.
This-device can be manufactured at a very small expense, and not only serves to teach the pupil to hold the pen or pencil in its proper position for writing, but also greatly lessens the fatigue of writing; hence this device is applicable not only for the use of pupils, but it may be used to advantage by all persons who have a great amount of writing to do.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The herein-described pen-rest, consisting of a ring having a piece of wire or strip of metal fastened to its under side, said strip or wire having one projecting straight end forming the pen-rest, and having its other end bent to form ahook adapted to pass under and around the second finger of" the writer, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,in apen-rest, of the ring, the piece of wire or strip of metal, bent to form a hook at one end, and the set-screw for fastening the wire and adjusting it upon the ring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CAMEROh MOKINN ON.
Witnesses:
DANIEL FRAGIR, GREEN B. TURNER.
