sMo'KE-coNsun/HNG oEvloE.
' SPECFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,600, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed December 4, 1882. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern.-
Beit known that I, XVILLIAM l?. HALL, of Piqua, in the county of Miami, and in the lState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Consuming Smoke and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of means illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which Figure I represents a longitudinal sectional view, showing my'invention applied to a steam boiler furnace, the section being taken on the line 'x x of' Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the furnace; and Fig. 3 represents a transverse or cross-sectional view on the line y y of Fig. l.
The letter A indicatesthe masonry or brick walls inclosing and supporting a steam-boiler,
B, and within which, and below the boiler, is located and constructed my improved furnace C, which is formed or built of iirebrick, or any other material the nature of which adapts it to withstand the action of excessive heat.
The letter C designates the lire-box of the furnace, the same being provided with .suitable grate-bars, D,and an. ash-pit, E, immediately below the said bars.
The letter F `indicates a fire -bridge just back of the nre-box, and G another or second fire-bridge at the rear of the bridge F, said bridges being made integral with and forming a part of the improved furnace. Between said nre-bridges is a chamber, H, having a curved bottom, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and directly above the curved bottom of said chamber is located an arched partition, I, which embraces the low er part of the boiler and extends downward about half-way of the said chamber, forming, with the firebridges, detlectors, which cause the dames from the combustion-chamber or fire-box to take a tortuous course in their passage under the boiier.I
The letter K indicates a lateral air-passage in the lower portion of the masonry of the furnace, from which branch the passages L, leading to theA chamber H, in order to supply air -to the unconsumed gases passing over from the burning fuel, in order to insure their con.
sumption.
The letter It indiates a damper locatedin the eduction-flue of the boiler-furnace, and controlled by a rod,S, by means of which the draft through the furnace may be regulated. f The passages L terminate in a series of openings, Z, arranged in two parallel rows, one above the other, and alternating with each other, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. rIhis causes the heated air to be delivered in a thin sheet or sheets, or a series of parallel l jets, to the gases passing from the dre-box, in-
suring thorough and effective combustion.
'The chamber H at one side is provided with an opening, T, (provided with a suitable plug,)
through which any ashes or accumulations the said passages L communicating with a passage, K, leading to the open air, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, inpresence of two witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1882.
WILLIAM PERRY HALL.
