4 Claims. (Cl. 2-479) This invention relates to a simulated pocket handkerchief article, and is characterized by a restraining means for holding the article in the pocket of the user so as to prevent its accidental removal from the pocket.

One of the principal disadvantages of using a simulated handkerchief article, comprising a flat base member having secured thereto the tips of a simulated handkerchief, is the fact that the flat base member may he accidentally pulled from the pocket much more readily than would be a full handkerchief folded and tucked into the pocket.

It is an object of this invention to provide a simulated pocket handkerchief article having means for adjustably restraining the article in the pocket of the user.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a simulated pocket handkerchief article which may be quickly and cheaply manufactured and which is provided with means for selectively restraining the article in the pocket of the user.

In accordance with these and other objects which will become apparent hereinafter, a preferred form of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a front view of a dress coat showing the simulated pocket handkerchief article of this invention in position in the breast pocket;

Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the article with the pocket cut away to reveal the article in position inside the pocket; and

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the simulated pocket handkerchief article alone.

Referring to the drawing, there is illustrated a mans coat 11 having a breast pocket 12, in which is located the simulated pocket handkerchief article 13 forming the subject of the present invention. The article 13 is comprised of a substantially flat base member 14 made of any suitable material, as, for example, a sheet of fiber glass, which is washable, ironable and is preferably fireproof in order to enable it to stand the cleaning and dry ing process without any danger of chat-ring. Secured near the upper edge of the base member 14 and extending thereabove is a simulated handkerchief 16 comprising only the simulated tips of the handkerchief. These handkerchief tips 16 are secured to the base 14 by any suitable means, such as stitching 1'7.

In accordance with the present invention, restraining means are provided for selectively restraining the article 13 in the pocket 12 while still permitting removal thereof when desired. This restraining means in the present invention comprises preferably a catch means in the form of an elongate catch member 18 which is movably secured to the base member 14, so as to be selectively adjusted into restraining position, or out of restraining position to permit removal of the article from the pocket. Such adjustable mounting of the catch member 1% on the base member 14 is preferably a pivotal mounting effected by an eyelet 19 pivotally securing the catch member 18 to the base member 14 near the bottom of both members.

States Patent At its upper edge, the catch member 18 is provided with at least one point and preferably several points 21. These points 21 engage the side of the pocket 12 when the member 18 is pivoted to one side, as shown in Figure 2, thereby serving to restrain the article in the pocket and minimizing the danger of accidental pulling out of the article 13 from the pocket.

In use, the article 13 is inserted into the pocket 12 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, with the catch member 18 preferably being positioned on the side of the base 14 which is away from the body of the user, although either position of the catch member is perfectly feasible, depending upon the preference of the user. After insertion of the article into the pocket, the catch member 18 is pivoted to one side, as shown in Figure 2, thereby bringing one or more of the points 21 into engagement with the side of the pocket 12. in this position the article 13 is, in a fashion, wedged in the pocket, so that any upward pulling force applied to the handkerchief 16 will tend to force the points 21 further into the side of the pocket 12, thereby enhancing the restraint and securement of the article in the pocket. To remove the article from the pocket for any desired reason, such as laundering, the user merely inserts his finger into the pocket and straightens the catch member 18 upward so that it no longer engages the side of the pocket. The article is then free to he slid upward and removed from the pocket.

While the instant invention has been shown and described herein in what is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention which is therefore not to be limited to the details disclosed herein, but is to be accorded the full scope of the claims.

What is claimed is:

1. Simulated pocket handkerchief article comprising a substantially flat base member approximately as large as the breast pocket of a mans coat and adapted to be inserted into the pocket, a simulated handkerchief secured along the length of the upper edge of said base member, extending above said upper edge and adapted to project out of the pocket, and a catch member pivotally secured to the base member for rotative adjustment about an axis substantially normal to said base member for engagement of the catch member with the pocket.

2. Article in accordance with claim 1 wherein said catch member is elongate and of length less than the height of said base member, and is pivoted near the bottom of said bhsc member.

3. Simulated pocket handkerchief article comprising a substantially flat base member approximately as large as the breast pocket of a mans coat and adapted to be inserted into the pocket, a simulated handkerchief secured along the length of the upper edge of said base member, extending above said upper edge and adapted to project out of the pocket, and an elongate relatively fiat member pivotally secured to said base member near the bottom thereof and extending upwardly, said elongate member being pivotal sidewise into detent engagement with the side of the pocket, thereby to hold the article in the pocket.

4. Article according to claim 3, wherein said elongate member is provided with at least one pointed portion at the upper edge thereof, thereby to enhance the maintenance of the article in the pocket.
