3 Claims. (Cl. 128-283) The present invention relates to colostomy appliances and more particularly to colostomy protectors.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a colostomy protector of a novel structure which avoids the inconveniences inherent in the colostomy protector devices hitherto known in the art.

Another object of the invention is to provide a colostomy protector which is simple in application and convenient to wear, and which does not shift relative to the body as the wearer assumes difierent positions.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a light weight colostomy protector which does not rub against the skin as the wearer moves and which permits easy access of air and evaporation of perspiration moisture from the skin.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof in connection with the accompanying drawings, inwhich:

Fig. 3 is a view on a still larger scale of one corner of the textile panel and adjacent belt portion forming part of the colostomy protector shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Referring now to the drawings, the colostomy protector according to the present invention comprises a belt generally denoted by l and adapted to encircle the trunk 20 of the wearer below the horizontal plane of the navel 2, an elastic band 3 adapted to encircle the leg portion 4 adjacent to the colostomy (not shown) substantially in the plane of the crotch 5, and a textile panel generally denoted by 6 and having its upper edge secured to the belt 1 and its lower edge to the band 3.

The panel 6 consists of a porous two-way stretch textile material 7, and is adapted to cover the colostomy, for instance by means of a gauze pad (not shown) inserted between the colostomy and the panel 6 and held securely in place by the latter.

The belt 1 may consist of two lengths 9 and 10 of cotton belting attached to opposite upper corners, respectively, of the panel 6. The two belt portions 9 and 10 may be connected by a buckle 11, so as to adapt the length of the belt 1 to the trunk 20 of the wearer.

The band 3 which encircles the leg portion 4 adjacent to the colostomy substantially in the plane of the crotch 5 is preferably woven or knitted from nylon and rubber threads. The band 3 passes around the entire leg portion 4 and through a pocket 12 formed along the lower marginal portion of the panel 6 by doubling of the twoway stretch material 7 upon itself and secured by stitches 13.

The remaining three sides of the panel 6 are reinforced by tape strips 14, 15 and 16, respectively, the strip 15 covering the upper marginal portion of the two-way stretch material 7 and forming a continuation of the Patented Nov. 26, 19,57

' 2 lengths19 and 10 of the belt 1 which are,respectively, se-, cured between theupper corners of the two-waystretch material 7 and the upper ends of the strips 14 and 16.

The panel 6 has substantially a trapezoidal shape, the two parallel sides being defined, respectively, by the strip 15 and the pocket 12, and the larger one of the parallel sides defined by the strip 15 being aligned with the parts 9 and 10 of the belt 1 while the shorter one of the parallel sides defined by the pocket 12 is aligned with the elastic band 3 passing through the pocket 12.

It has been found that in order to obtain satisfactory results the panel 6 must be properly dimensioned to cover the colostomy and to extend over a part of the wearers trunk which does not change its form or size to any substantial extent regardless of the position assumed by the wearer.

Preferably, the upper side of the panel 6 is about 5% inches long whereas the lower parallel side of the panel 6 has a length of 4% inches, the distance between the outer edges of the upper and lower sides of the panel 6 being preferably equal to 5 /2 inches as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

A colostomy protector of the design, shape and dimensions specified above is easily applied by first pulling the band 3 into position on the leg portion 4 so as to engage the crotch 5, then placing the parts 9 and 10 of the belt 1 on the trunk 20 of the wearer so as to encircle the same below the navel 2, whereupon the parts 9 and 10 are connected with each other by the buckle 11. This causes the panel 6 to lie over the colostomy and to hold a gauze pad or the like (not shown) in contact with the colostomy. Owing to its shape and size the panel 6 is stretched to substantially the same extent regardless of the position assumed by the wearer. As will be seen, the shape and size of the body portion covered by the panel 6 are not substantially altered no matter whether the wearer assumes a standing, sitting or reclining position because the panel 6 does not extend over any joints or large muscle groups of the body.

Having now described in detail my invention and the mode of its operation, I wish it to be understood that numerous changes may be made in the parts of the colostomy protector described hereinabove without departing from the scope of my invention which is defined by the claims appended to this specification.

I claim:

1. A colostomy appliance, comprising in combination a belt adapted to encircle the trunk of the wearer below the horizontal plane of the navel, an elastic band adapted to encircle the leg portion adjacent to the colostomy substantially in the plane of the crotch, and a panel of a two-way stretch material secured at its upper and lower edges to said belt and band, respectively, and extending therebetween, said panel being adapted to cover the colostomy and being provided with a pocket arranged along the lower marginal portion of said two way stretch material of said panel, said band passing through said pocket so that the panel is stretched to substantially the same extent in different body positions of the wearer.

A colostomy appliance, comprising in combination a belt adapted to encircle the trunk of the wearer below the horizontal plane of the navel, an elastic band adapted to encircle the leg portion adjacent to the colostomy substantially in the plane of the crotch, and a panel of a twoway stretch material secured at its upper and lower edges to said belt and band, respectively, and extending therebetween, said panel having a substantially trapezoidal shape with the larger one of its parallel sides being aligned with said belt and the shorter one of its parallel sides being aligned with said elastic band, so that said panel is stretched to substantially the same extent in different body positions of the wearer.
