Description
United States Patent O GUIDE MEANS FOR CUTTING HAIR Ann De Sants, Warren, Ohio Application July 17, 1953, Serial No. 368,660
1 Claim. (Cl. 13245) My invention relates to guide means for cutting hair, m re particularly to means for shaping ladies hair to selected contours, and the principal object of my invention is to provide new and improved guide means of such character.
It will be appreciated that hair styles, particularly ladies hair styles, require various hair shaping and contouring, and that the ladies desire to change their hair style from time-to-time. However, a change in hair style quite frequently requires a change in hair contour in order to make the hair style eifective and women have either avoided a change in hair style or have changed to a hair style with ineffective results because of the expense involved in having the hair shaped by a professional hair cutter.
Further, with the increasing use of home permanent sets, women have largely visited the beauty parlors only to have their hair cut and again because of the expense involved, such visits have been infrequent with the result that the particular individuals hair style became ragged in appearance between visits to the beauty shop.
My invention provides hair cutting guide means which may be used by any inexperienced person to cut hair to correspond to any desired hair contour and accordingly the hair may be cut at home at any time with the result that the hair style is maintained in proper condition and therefore the following home permanent will produce the most effective results.
In addition, a woman may change hair styles as frequently as she pleases since the hair may be cut at home and the expense of the beauty parlor is avoided. Further and other advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application there is shown, for purposes of illustration, an embodiment which my invention may assume, and in such drawing:
Figure l is a view of my invention as applied to the head of a person whose hair is to be cut, the view showing the head of the person from one side,
Figure 2 is a view of my invention showing its disposition with respect to the back of the head, and
Figures 3 and 4 are plan views of opposite sides of the hair cutting guide.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, the hair cutting guide comprises a template which is preferably flat and thin in cross-section and may be formed of any suitable material which has a certain degree of stifiness, such as cardboard, rubber, plastic or the like.
The template may be of any desired shape in plan view and at present it is preferred to provide a template generally of heart shape, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The upper portion of the template, as viewed in Figures 3 and 4, is recessed, as shown at 11, to fit about the head of the user at the base of the skull, as suggested in Figure 1.
The recess 11 may be of a Width so that the template may be moved toward position at the base of the skull and slightly fiexed to engage the margin defining the recess with the skull and thus hold the template in place. However, because of the various sizes and shapes of heads, it is preferable, in order for one template to accommodate various heads, to form the recess to comfortably fit the largest head and to provide band means 12 which preferably encircles the forehead portion of the wearer and permits the template to hang downwardly from the base of the skull, as seen in Figure l. The band means may take any suitable form and as examples it may be a flexible band having opposite ends secured to the template, or it may be a two-part strap adapted to be held in place by means of a buckle.
In any event, the template 10 is held in position to extend downwardly from the lower part of the skull so that the hair of the person may be combed to lie there over, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The template is preferably positioned so that it is generally disposed centrally with respect to the rear portion of the head, as shown iu Figure 2.
Formed on one or both sides of the template are guide means which define one or more hair contours. Such guide means may be in the form of ridges formed integrally with the template or separately attached thereto, but for reasons of economy, I prefer to form the guide means as a series of lines inscribed or otherwise suitably formed on the template side.
Figure 3 shows a series of guide lines 14 which are generally centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis on one side of the template 10 and said guide lines extend from the top toward the bottom of the template. The various guide lines represent progressively longer contours of a particular hair style. If desired, the opposite surface of the template 10 may be formed with a plurality of guide lines, such as shown by the lines 15 in Figure 4, to define progressively longer contours of a different type of hair style. Thus, either side of the template may be used to support the hair to be cut, depending upon the hair style desired.
In operation, a user may secure the template to the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the hair may be combed to lie over and along the template in generally centrally distributed manner. A hair cutting device, such as scissors, may then be used to cut the ends of the hair so that the hair is trimmed to conform to a selected contour line. It will be appreciated that although the user may comb and trim his or her own hair by use of a mirror, it is preferable that a person other than the user perform the combing and cutting operations for the sake of accuracy.
In view of the foregoing it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have accomplished at least the principal object of my invention and it will also be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiment herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the invention is capable of uses and has advantages not herein specfically described, hence it will be appreciated that the herein disclosed embodiment is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
A hair cutting guide particularly adapted for use in cutting and shaping women's hair, comprising a template in the form of a relatively flat plate member, a band having opposite ends connected to said template and having an intermediate portion adapted to engage the forehead portion of the head of the person whose hair is to be cut to support said template in hanging relation at the lower back portion of the head, said template hav Patented Oct. 8, 1957 ing an arcuatemrgnal recess topass therear part-ofhair and upon Which the hair maybe e0m hedhaekward thereover, and said template. having guidemeang defining hair contour for guiding cutting action of'a=hair cutting device to shape the hair to the contour definedby said guide means.
