vide a shirt with an entire or, closed back any desired and front, adapted to be used either with or without a collar permanently attached.

My invention consists of a special construction of the shirt, as hereinafter explained,

whereby the back and front are both closed and the opening on the shoulder and back is closed by a re-enforce or flap formed by a separate piece.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved shirt. Fig. 2 is a view of the flap detached. Fig. 3 is a back view of the shirt. Fig. 4 is a front 'view, and Fig. 5 a backview of the the shirt without a collar.

In the drawings, the front A of theshirt is formed in the usual manner of making whole-front shirts, and has a single button or stud at the throat. It may be ornamented in manner by cord, to imitate a laced front, as is common in woolen bicycleshirts, or it may be provided with studs, buttons, plaiting, or any other ornament suited to the material of the shirt or required by the fancy of the wearer. The back B is also made an'dfitted to the shirt in the ordinary manner-that is to say, connected to the front on the shoulders-except that it is cut away from the neck downward on the line 00 3 x to form a triangular opening, substantially as shown at C. Outside of this I attach a flap, D, stitched, preferably, tothe shirt on a line, 2 2, and on the shoulder of 12 1, and a short distance on the shoulder from sleeve-seam toward the neck, as shown at'l 12, Figs. 1 and 4. The upper edge of the body, which may have any desired ornamental stitching, extends across in front of the neck, over the shoulders, and down the back on the line 00 3/ z. The flap, being stitched in the manner shown, may be thrown back, and thus the opening enlarged to admit the head of the wearer, but when the garment is on and the flap is brought forward and fastened in place it covers the opening and overlaps it on both sides around the neck. To the edge 4 4 of this flap I may attach a collar, E, with bands in front and button-holes 5 5 to secure it to the button or stud 6, this single button or stud holding the whole flap. secure. Thus the back of the wearer is covered, no buttoning is required in front, and there is no seam to open on the shoulders. In fact, the over lap of the re-enforce completely covers the whole of the back and shoulders and makes a complete upper garment.

The flap D may be made of the same con tinuous piece as the body of the shirt, and

the re-enforce be put in underneath, connecting with the main parts in the same manner as described in connection with the flaps.

In case the shirt be of that class in which a detachable collar is desirable, I omit the collar E and work button-holes at the points 7 7. A collar may bebuttoned 011 to the front and rear buttons or studs, and the buttonsfor the holes 7 7 may be set at any desired point without disturbing the alignment of the collar-buttons; but when a permanentlyattached collar is used only one button or stud is required, and there is no opening on the shoulders, and the whole garment fits closely about the neck of the wearer. The 'collarless form is very well adapted. to that class of woolen shirts designed to be used with detachable linen bosoms and collars, and either form is especially fitted for bicyclist-s or others who may desire to wear the shirts without coat or vest.
