'w. J. KLEIN ETAL DISPLAY DEVICE Dec. 30, 1958 Filed Nov. 20. 1956 YINVENTOR. Jflw w United States Patent DISPLAY DEVICE William J. Klein and Stephen A. Dube, West Springfield, Ma'ss., assignors to Boxmakers, Incorporated, West Springfield, Mass, a corporation Application November 20, 1956, Serial No. 623,404
1 Claim. (Cl. 206-80) This invention relates to improvements in a display device for displaying, shipping and storing objects.
The principal object of the invention is directed to the provision of a device for holding and displaying objects of various forms for sale.
What may be called relatively small objects, such as cosmetic items, lipsticks, hardware items, medical items, and the like, are to be found on the counters of stores for the attention of prospective customers.
Such objects are usually in trays or are more or less loose on counters, and therefore are not adequately displayed. Furthermore this practice encourages pilfering.
The novel device of the invention includes a support for an object, which is of considerable area or dimension as compared with the object. The support is adapted for display purposes as it may carry printing, ornamentation,
.and descriptive matter so as to attract the attention of prospective customers to the item.
The object is associated with the support in such a manner that the separation of the object from the holder, by a pilferer, is not readily accomplished. The support, being of more generous dimensions than the object, dis courages pilfering of the holder and object.
The invention is adapted for use in connection with objects or items of various and numerous kinds and types. For purposes of disclosure however, the novel features of the invention will be described in connection with an object commonly known as a lipstick; that is a case enclosing lip rouge material.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the form of the device without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention which will be described in the present preferred form thereof, as shown in the drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a plan view of the support of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the object holder of the device;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder shown in Fig. 2, with an object inserted therein;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the support shown in Fig. 1, showing the holder with an object therein associated therewith; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A support 2 is provided which will be formed to have a pair of plies 4 of relatively stilt material which may be cardboard or the like. The support may be formed from a sheet doubled upon itself 'at 6. Otherwise the plies may be secured at various points by adhesive, a staple or staples, or the like.
Where the support is to be used for a lipstick case, the plies thereof are provided with openings 8 which are in register. For other objects, the openings will be of a dilferent shape, and in all cases, the opening in the support will snugly receive the object to be displayed.
A holder 10 is provided which includes a pair of plies 12 of relatively somewhat bendable material, such as plastic or the like.
The plies 12 will preferably be formed from transparent plastic material and will be joined or sealed along lines 14, so as to provide elongated channel forming portions 16 therebetween, which, when separated, provide a channel or tube for an object.
The plies forming the channel portions 16 of the holder are separable to provide a channel, for the insertion thereinto, of an object such as a lipstick case 18, as shown in Fig. 3. In Fig. 4, the case 18 has therein lip rouge material, indicated by 20.
As shown, the holder 10 has double ply opposite side portions 22 and 24, along the lines 14, and at the sides of the channel forming portions 16.
The holder 10 having the object 18 therein is inserted between the plies of the support in such a manner that the channel portions thereof and the object therein are disposed in the openings 8 of the support so as to be clearly visible, as in Figs. 2 and 5. The side portions 22 and 24 of the holder are disposed between the plies of the support, at the sides of the opening.
The plies of the support may be secured together at spaced points by a staple such as S, or by adhesive, or the like, either prior to or subsequent to insertion of the holder therein. If the holder is to be inserted subsequent to securement of the support plies, provision will be made for endwise insertion of the holder and object therebetween and into the opening of the support.
The holder for the object may, in some cases, be made from material which is sufliciently bendable to allow the purchaser to press on a side of the holder and object for removal laterally from the opening. Such could be as readily accomplished by a pilferer for which reason would be generally objectionable. It is preferable that the material of the holder be not readily bendable, thereby to require the object and holder to be removed endwise from between the plies of the support.
Outer faces of one or both sides of the support may carry any desired printing, ornamentation, advertising matter or the like that may be desired and pertinent to a device for use with various objects, and accordingly changes and modifications may be made in the form of the device, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A two-part package display device for an object comprising, a support of sheet material having inherent resiliency and including a pair of superposed flat plies hingedly connected to each other and being separable from each other for the insertion of objects therebetween, the plies of said support having elongated openings of a certain length in register with each other, a coacting holder positioned between the plies of said support comprising sheet material including a pair of superposed flat plies secured together at opposite end portions thereof and each having a pair of parallel longitudinally-spaced transversely-extending channel-defining lines adjacent the inner side of each of the opposite end portions of said holder, the portions of the plies of said holder intermediate the pairs of channel-defining lines being separable to form an openended transversely-extending tube snugly encircling an object which is closely received in the elongated openings of said support, the transverse width of the plies of said holder being relatively less than the certain length of the registered openings in the plies of said support, portions of the plies of said support at opposite longitudinal sides of the registered openings being yieldably free of each other, said holder beingmovable relatively to said support between the yieldahle plies thereof in' directions laterally of said support toprovidefor the insertion of said holder between the plies of said support and the sliding of said holder inwardly therehet'ween for the location of the channel of said holder and the object therewithin in the registered openings of said support for holding said holder against displacement from said support, the portions of the plies of said support away from the registered openings being secured together in superposed relation.
