CLAS P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. "281,536, dated September 4, 1 883.
Application filed July 30, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom) it may concern.-
setts, have invented an Improvement in Clasps,
of which the following-description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a' specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. i
This invention has for its object to prevent the entrance of the clothing between the rear end of a clasp used for stocking and sleeve supporters, &c., and the rigid or base jaw thereof; and my invention consists in the combination of a rigid or base jaw, provided with afender extended upwardly therefrom, with a pivoted spring-actuated jaw having its rear end turned inwardly toward the rigid or base jaw and covered by the fender.
Figure 1 represents the shape of a blank from which to make the rigid or base jaw of my improvedclasp; Fig. 2, a top view of my improved clasp; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section thereof on the dotted line 00 ac, and Fig.4 a side view of a modification to be referred to.
The rigid or base jaw a, Figs. 2 to 4, is made from a sheet-metal blank, shaped as shown in Fig. 1, the said blank having teeth 2, projections 3 3 for ears a, and a shank part back of the said projections, the said shankpart being adapted to be secured to a piece of elastic or other webbing in usual manner, either by providing the said shank with a slot, as at 4, Fig.
1, or with prongs, as at{5, Fig. 4, the said prongs being adapted to thrust through the elastic or other web to which the said clasp is to be attached.
The blank for the rigid or base jaw is cut, as indicated, to produce a tongue, 6, which, when turned up, forms a fender, as best shown inv Figs. 3 and4, to cover the space behind the rear inwardly-inclined end, 8, ofthe jaw 0, pivoted at d, and provided with a spring, e, of usual construction, by which to close the clasp upon a garment or other thing inserted between the jaws thereof. j
The fender 6 is struck up, and in forming the same aspace is left in the shank of the part a,
into which the rear end of the jaw c enters when depressed.
