Description
y 1958 v R. A. HAYDEN ET AL 2,845,184
COMBINATION HOLDER FOR PENCILS, ENVELQPES, AND CUPS OR THE. LIKE Filed May 31, 1955 v 04 INVENTOR- /?a 021: I 522952 0 fiiimzky ATTORNEY United States Patent COMBINATION HOLDER FOR PENCILS, ENVE- LOPES, AND CUPS OR THE LIKE Application May 31, 1955, Serial No. 511,867 3 Claims. (Cl. 211-87) The present invention relates to combination holders and more particularly to such a holder which is adapted for attachment to the back of a church pew, and in which holder may be placed pencils, contribution envelopes and communion cups for the use of congregation members who occupy a pew immediately to the rear of the one on which such a holder is installed.
The primary objects of the invention are to provide a combination holder for pencils, envelopes 'and'cups or the like, which is of simple and inexpensive construction while at the same time being attractive in appearance, readily attachable to a church pew, and convenient in use.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of the new combination holder with a pencil, envelope and communion cup disposed in certain of the receptacles thereof;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the holder per se attached to the rear of a church pew here shown fragmentarily;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken on line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an elevational view, on a reduced scale, of the sheet metal blank from which the main body of the combination holder is formed.
Referring now in detail to this drawing wherein like parts are designated by the same numerals in the several views, the main body of the holder is formed of sheet metal so as to provide end flanges 11 adapted for attachment to the flat rear surface 12 of an element 13 which represents the back of a church pew or the like, as by means of nails or screws 14 passing through apertures 15 in the end flanges 11 and into the element 13.
The body 10 of the holder extends from the end flanges 11 thereof rearwardly, then inwardly and then forwardly to form, with the flat surface 12, a pair of vertically elongated receptacles 16 adapted to receive therein pencils or the like, one such pencil being shown in Figure 1 and being designated 17. The body 10 extends thence rearwardly and inwardly to form a horizontally elongated receptacle 18 adapted to receive therein contribution envelopes or the like, one such envelope being indicated in Figure 1 and being designated 19. The body 10 has flanges 20, 21 extending forwardly from its lower rearward edges to form closures for the lower ends of the receptacles 16 and 18 respectively. If desired, teeth 22 may be provided on the front edge of the middle flange 21, which teeth bite into the supporting element 13 and positively a body formed of prevent the passing of envelopes downwardly between the flange 21 and the element 13.
A metal strip 23 has its medial portion secured as by spot welding indicated at 24 to the rear wall of the main body 10 of the holder, said strip 23 having oppositely laterally extending arms 25 which are curled outwardly, rearwardly, inwardly and then forwardly to form a pair of vertically disposed cylindrical sockets 26 which [are adapted to receive communion cups therein, one such cup being shown in Figure l and being designated 27. Annular rubber elements 28 are desirably seated in the cylindrical sockets 26 for the cushioned reception of the communion cups, thus to eliminate noise and the possible breakage of cups during their removal from and reinsertion in the holder.
It will thus be seen that the invention provides a convenient, attractive and economical combination holder for attachment to church pews, and while but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described it will be understood that numerous details thereof may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as the same is defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. A holder adapted for attachment to the substantially vertical, flat rear surface of a pew or the like, comprising: sheet metal so as to provide end flanges adapted for flush attachment to said flat surface and a rear wall spaced rearwardly of said flat surface and provided with vertically extending forwardly embossed ridges dividing the space between said rear wall and said flat surface into compartmented receptacles, said body having closure flanges extending forwardly from its lower rearward edge to form closures for the lower ends of said of said bodys rear wall, said strip having oppositely laterally extending arms curled rearwardly, inwardly and then forwardly to form a pair of vertically disposed cylindrical sockets adapted to receive cups or the like therein.
2. A holder according to claim 1 characterized by having a pair of annular rubber elements seated in saidcylindrical sockets for the cushioned reception of said cups or the like.
3. A holder according to claim 1 characterized by having teeth on the forward edge of one of said closure flanges adapted to bite into the flat rear surface of said pew or the like.
