This invention relates to an electric massage device and more particularly to a hand operated instrument which may be used to massage the head and scalp as wellas for general massage.

An object of this invention is to provide a compact, easily manipulated device which will be relatively simple in its construction but which will be efiicient in operation.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which will remain cool even after continued use and which will be much quieter than similar devices such as vibrators that are on the market today.

A still further object is to provide a massage device in which the applicator or element contacting the body may be removed and changed for sanitary purposes.

I have found that my massage device is particularly adapted to the massage and manipulation of the scalp to stimulate the growth of hair and to keep the scalp healthy.

Other objects and advantages will appear from the accompanying drawing and following descriptions in which-- Fig. 1 is an elevation in cross-section showing my device.

Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof.

Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings I provide a casing it having a body member H and a handle I2. The casing is formed of two parts l4 and 15 which are joined together by means of screws passing through the openings 16.

Mounted within the casing In is the supporting member, or bracket, 20 to which is fastened the spring member 2| which engages the support 20 at its upper portion but which is flared away at the lower portion 22 to provide suitable movement. The spring member 2| supports the arm 23.

Also mounted on the member 20 is the coil 25 surrounding the core 26.. Attached to the arm 23 is the applicator plate 28. This plate is mounted by three elements-a center post 30, and two curved plates 3| and 32 which pass through openings in the casing as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. The applicator, itself, 35, is preferably formed of rubber or similar material and provided with a series of cross-ribs 3B and depending finger-like members 31. The end of the handle member I2 is provided with an opening to receive the insulating member 40, and the wire 4| leads to a switch member 42 from which the wire 43 leads to the core 26. A similar wire 44 leads to the core.

Mounted on the end of the support 20 is a cushion '29 made of rubber or other suitable material. It has been a fault with most devices of this type that in operation the arm would contact the supporting bracket causing considerable heat and noise and this I have eliminated with the cushion 29. In operation when the switch is turned on and the coil energized the arm 23 will be caused to vibrate and the impulses will be transmitted to the members 30, 3! and 32 to the vibration plate 28 and in turn to the applicator 35.

In order that the applicator may be removed for sterilization or for changing, it is provided with a lip 39 which grasps the vibrating plate but which, being flexible, may be snapped over the plate to remove the applicator.

When the applicator is applied to the body, such as to the scalp, it has an invigorating effect and increases the circulation among the blood cells. It will also shake loose and. cause to separate any scales or dandruff or other unhealthy conditions which tend to retard the growth of hair.

I claim:

In an electric massage device a casing, a bracket mounted in said casing, said bracket comprising a plurality of laminated plates and being substantially U-shaped, a depending portion of said plates defining a core at approximately the center portion of said U-shaped bracket, a coil mounted on said bracket around said core, a spring mounted on said bracket at one end thereof on one of the depending legs of said U-shaped bracket, an arm on said spring, said arm having an end extending to a point adjacent the opposite end of said bracket and cushioning means between said bracket and the end of said arm to limit the movement of said arm, a plurality of posts depending from said arm, a vibration plate supported therefrom and a massage device having a flexible inwardly extending lip engaging said vibration plate and removable therefrom.
