EXTENSIBLE IRON STAND Filed Nov. 17. 1950 i atented Jan. 26, 195 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EXTENSIBLE IRON STAND Cornelius K. Brandt, Reedley, Calif. Application November 17, 1950, Serial N0. 196,329
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an extensible iron stand for attachment to an ironing board.
An object of this invention is to provide an iron stand which is particularly adapted for attachment to an end of the ironing board in a manner wherein the stand is extensible with respect to said board.
Another object of this invention is to provide an iron stand which is supported in a position overlying an ironing board contiguous to one end thereof and is movable into a position in end-toend relation with respect to said one end of the ironing board.
A further object of this invention is to provide an extensible iron stand which is particularly adapted for quick and easy slidable attachment to an ironing board in a manner wherein the stand may be slid into a position overlying the board when the board is to be stored.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an extensible iron stand for attachment to an ironing board which is relatively simple in structure and chea to manufacture.
The above and still further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description of the invention, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the extensible iron stand of the present invention, shown supporting an iron and mounted on an ironing board contiguous to one end thereof;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, with parts broken away, of an iron cord guide and take-up shown attached to the iron stand; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged, perspective, fragmentary detail of the iron cord-engaging collar of the iron cord guide and take-up illustrated in Figure 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, there is shown the iron stand of the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 10, which is attached to an ironing board I I at the end of the board remote from the pointed end thereof.
The stand in includes a pair of guides l5 and I6 which are arranged on opposite sides of the ironing board H contiguous to one end thereof taken along the and secured to said sides. Suitable bolts l1 effect the securement of the. guides 15 and [6 to the ironing board I I with the upper side edges of the guides substantially in the plane of the top l2 of the ironing board, and with the lower side edges substantially in the plane of the bottom H? of the ironing board H. Contiguous, to the lower side edges thereof, the guides l5 and I6 are provided with the longitudinally extending guideways l8 and I9.
Overlying the ironing board II at said one end thereof is an iron-supporting tray or iron stand 20 which is extensible into various positions in end-to-end relation with respect to the ironing board H, as illustrated in Figure 1. The ironsupporting tray includes a flat iron-supporting surface 2i which is spaced above the adjacent upper surface l2 of the ironing board H and supports an iron 30 including an ironing cord 3|. The spacing between the iron-supporting surface 2| and the ironing board ll provides a heatinsulated space resistant to the transfer of heat between the tray 20 and the ironing board II. The tray 20 further includes a first end flange 22 dependingly secured at one end of the tray and adapted to ride along the upper surface l2 of the: ironing board, and side flanges 23 and 24 like-- Wise adapted to ride along the surface I2. other end of the tray 20 is provided with a depending end flange 25 which is disposed in substantially spaced, parallel relation with respect to the end flange 22.
Suitable brace means are carried by each of the guides l5 and I6, and operatively connected to the iron-supporting tray for mounting the latter for extensile movement with respect to said one end of the ironing board from the storing position overlying the ironing board to the various end-to-end, aligned positions for actual use. The brace means are designated by the reference numerals 26 and 21, and each comprises an elongated rod having one end slidably received and supported within the longitudinally extending guideways l8 and I9 provided in the guides l5 and I6. The other end of each of the rods is bent to form the brackets 28 and 29 which are engageable about the corresponding corners of the other end of the supporting tray 20. As clearly shown in Figure 2, each of the corner brackets 28 and 29 includes an upwardly opening, U -shaped clamp 33 which is engageable about the depending marginal end flange 25 of the tray 20.
Positioned contiguous to the other end of the tray is an iron cord guide and take-up, generally designated by the reference numeral 35 which is detachably secured to the tray 28. The iron cord guide and take-up 35 includes a supporting bracket 36 engageable about the depending end marginal flange 25 of the tray 25!, the bracket 36 supporting an extensible coil spring 31 through which is extended the iron cord 3!. The free end of the extensible coil spring 31 includes a collar 38 which is engageable about and securable to the ironing cord 3|, as illustrated in Figure 4.
In actual use, thetray. 20 can be moved'tothe position= illustrated in Figure 1. =When the tray is in this position, the major portion of the ironing board I I can be used. In the event that the pointed end of the board is to be usediit may be desired to have the iron supported in a position somewhat closer to the pointed end. :Under these conditions the tray 20 can be. slid ,to .the nosition overlying the end of the board reinotefrom the pointed end. This position may also be. efiected when it is necessary to store the ironing board.
Although only one embodiment ;of the iron stand of the present invention has been described, it isreadily apparent that numerous modifications can be made without=departing from :the
spirit of-the invention as set forth in the ap- 25 pended claim.
What I claim is:
The combination with an ironing board having a pair. of guides secured-on opposite sides of said 4 ironing board contiguous to one end thereof, of an iron-supporting tray overlying said one end of said ironing board and slidably supported on said board for movement from its position overlying said one end of said ironing board to an extended position with respect to said one end of said ironing board, and brace means slidably supported in said guides and operatively connected to said tray, each of said brace means embodying-,a rodhaving one end slidably supported-withinalongitudinaily exterrding guideway provided in the respective one of said guides and having a bracket on the other end engageablegahout: the corresponding corner of said supporting tray, the iron-supporting surface of said tray/being spaced above said ironing board to .providea heatinsulating space therebetween.
